The
following prayers along with the verses of the hymn "O Come, O Come, Immanuel",
are based on seven prayers from the early church used in the seven days
before Christmas. These prayers address Christ using many of the
Messianic titles found in the Old Testament.
An
Advent wreath that includes four candles (one for each week) can be used
in connection with these prayers which are most appropriately prayed at
dinner time throughout the season.

O King of the Nations and their Desired One, and Cornerstone
of
the House of God, come and save man whom you formed out of dust.
GROUP:
Come, Lord, come to save us.

O Immanuel, our King and Lawgiver, the Expected One of the
Nations
and their Savior, come to save us O Lord our God.
GROUP:

The Spirit of the Lord moved over the darkness of earth and there was light
and life. May the burning of these candles remind us of the Lord's
coming.

Amen.

the four candles.

Lord God, fill our hearts with your Holy Spirit, and as you revealed
your Son through his coming as man, so lead us through his suffering and
death to the glory of his resurrection. We ask this through our Lord Jesus
Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the Holy Spirit, one God, for
ever and ever.
GROUP:
Amen

O Come, O Come, Immanuel
(7) O come, Desire of Nations,
bind
All people in one heart
and mind;
Bid envy, strife, and quarrels
cease;
Fill the whole world with
heaven's peace.
Refrain: Rejoice!
Rejoice! Immanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.
(1) O come, O come, Immanuel,
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile
here
Until the Son of God appear.
Refrain: Rejoice!
Rejoice! Immanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.
The sun of righteousness
shall dawn from on high
