The
following prayers along with the verses of the hymn "O Come, O Come, Immanuel",
are based on seven prayers from the early church used in the seven days
before Christmas. These prayers address Christ using many of the
Messianic titles found in the Old Testament.
An
Advent wreath that includes four candles (one for each week) can be used
in connection with these prayers which are most appropriately prayed at
dinner time throughout the season.
Week Two Of
Advent
LEADER:
O Root of Jesse, who stands as a banner for the peoples, before whom
kings close their mouths, to whom the nations pray, come to deliver us,
wait no more.
GROUP:
Come, Lord, come to save us.
LEADER:
O Key of David, and Scepter of the House of Israel, who opens and
no man shuts, who shuts and no man opens, come and lead the captives from
prison and set free those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death.
GROUP:
Come, Lord, come to save us.
LEADER:
The Spirit of the Lord moved over the darkness of earth and there was light
and life. May the burning of these candles remind us of the Lord's
coming.
GROUP:
Come, Lord, come to save us.
Light
the two candles.
LEADER:
God of power and mercy, open our hearts in welcome. Remove the things that
hinder us from receiving Christ with joy, so that we may share his wisdom
and become one with him when he comes in glory. We ask this through
Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one
God, for ever and ever.
GROUP:
Amen
Sing
verse three and four of O Come, O Come, Immanuel.

O Come, O Come, Immanuel
(3) O come, Thou Rod of Jesse,
free,
Thine own from Satan's tyranny;
From depths of hell thy
people save,
And give them victory o'er
the grave.
Refrain: Rejoice!
Rejoice! Immanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.
(4) O come, Thou Key of David,
come;
And open wide our heav'nly
home;
Make safe the way that leads
on high,
And close the path to misery.
Refrain: Rejoice!
Rejoice! Immanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.
The sun of righteousness
shall dawn from on high
