Music at St Lawrence's

Our Music Group consists of the Choir, singing in four parts (soprano, alto, tenor, bass) and the instrumental group, currently flutes, recorders, violins, viola and keyboard. There are no auditions for members: we welcome all enthusiastic musicians, although we expect instrumentalists to be at least Grade 3 standard. We would particularly welcome more very young players (Primary School age), as our present players will all be reaching school-leaving age within the next few years. We also would love to have more tenor and alto voices.

The Music Group play and sing at 10 o'clock Mass on Sundays, and on special feasts. The Choir are often asked to sing at funerals and weddings.

In line with current Church teaching, our aim is always to be inclusive, i.e. the group is there to lead and encourage the worshipping community in singing the liturgy. For this reason, the group is part of the congregation; its role is always 'Participation, not performance'.

Southwark Diocese have a very supportive Music Committee, and many of our members attend the monthly workshops, held at Tooting Bec or Canterbury. We also form part of the Diocesan choir at big events in the Cathedral, e.g. the Chrism Mass on Maundy Thursday, the Rite of Election, and other special Diocesan celebrations.

We occasionally plan joint services with Holy Trinity Church of England, Lamorbey, and join with other local choirs for "Churches Together in Sidcup" events.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO JOIN US AS A SINGER OR INSTRUMENTALIST, PLEASE CONTACT MARY HAWES (020 8300 0521) OR THE PRESBYTERY
