TRINITY SUNDAY: One point that Jehovah’s Witnesses always make, when talking to Catholics, is that you don’t find the word Trinity in Scripture. Of course this is perfectly correct, but it does not follow that the Trinity is some kind of invention, or introduction of pagan ideas into Christianity. We do not believe in three gods, but one God, who reveals himself in the New Testament as Father, Son and Spirit. How Father, Son and Spirit relate to each other was a question that exercised the minds of Christians for some four centuries, until a final consensus was agreed by the Council of Chalcedon in 451 AD. We believe that in Jesus, and the sending of the Holy Spirit, God has revealed something of his own inner nature. The Trinity is not simply a human way of speaking about an incomprehensible God. In the end, though, no human words can capture the inner nature of God. Our response must be one of wonder and awe at being admitted to a relationship with the living God, rather than speculating on what it is like to be God.
