On
the 16th of November 1887, the southern part of the Vicariate
Apostolic of Zanzibar was erected as a Prefecture Apostolic of Central Zanzibar
and entrusted to the Benedictine Congregation of St. Ottilien in Bavaria,
Germany. In 1992 the Prefecture was raised to the status of a Vicariate, while
in 1906 the name was officially changed to that of Vicariate Apostolic of Dar
es Salaam. In 1912 the southern part of the Vicariate was erected as the
Prefecture Apostolic of Lindi. In 1922, after the withdrawal of the German
missionaries, Vicariate was again divided, the western portion now forming the
Diocese of Iringa entrusted to the Consolata Fathers of Turin, Italy. In 1953
the Vicariate Apostolic of Dar es Salaam was raised to the rank of an
Archdiocese and Metropolitan See of the Ecclesiatical Province of Eastern
Tanganyika which includes the Diocese of Morogoro, Dodoma, Iringa, Moshi and
Mbulu.

The
Prefecture of Dodoma was erected on January 28th 1935. It became a
Vicariate on May 10th 1951, and finally it was raised to the status
of a Diocese on March 25th, 1953. Confided to the Congregation of
the Passion. Passionist Fathers (CP,) North Italian province. The northern part
of the Diocese was detached from the late Vicariate Apostolic of Kilimanjaro;
the central part and western parts from Bagamoyo, the southern part from
Iringa.

History
The
hospital was started in 1927 s a dispensary by Baldegg Sisters. In 1930 a 30
bed hospital was build. The first Medical Officer came to Ifakara in 1951. The
main buildings were built in the late fifties. Modre buildings were
constructed: 1963 – TB ward, 1969 OPD, 1974 operating theatre, 1977 labour ward
and 1982 the laboratory.
The
hospital has operated as a Designated District Hospital for Kilombero District
since 1976.
The
hospital has 371 beds. It also acts as refereal center for Mahenge District.
St.
Francis hospital runs an upgrading course for nurses from grade B to grade A.

The
present Diocese of Morogoro originally formed part of the Prefecture Apostolic
of Zanzibar. The Mission of Bagamoyo was founded in 1868. It was the first
residential station on the East African coast north of Portuguese territory.
Once a foothold was gained the Missions at Mhonda, Mandera and Morogoro were
established between 1877 and 1882 in territory which was then under the
suzerainity of the Sultan of Zanzibar,
Tunnungo; Ilonga and Matembo issions were founded between 1884 and 1895.
On
11th May, 1906, the Vicariate of Central Zanzibar was erected,
containing all the Missions of the Zanzibar Vicariate which were situated in
Germany East Africa. On 21st December 1906, the new Vicariate
received the name Bagamoyo. In 1910
the Vicariate was again divided; the southern part retained the name of
Bagamoyo; and the northern part became the Vicariate of Kilimanjaro.
In 1934 a district in the western section of the
Vicariate, including Dodoma and Mpwapwa, was detached too form part of the new
Prefecture Apostolic of Dodoma entrusted to the Passionists. In 1952 the
Handeni district has been given to the Prefecture of Tanga. In 1954 the
Vicariate of Bagamoyo became the Diocese of Morogoro.

The Prefecture Apostolic of Tanga was erected on 3rd
May, 1950. It had hitherto formed part of the Vicariate Apostolic of
Kilimanjaro. The Prefecture is confided to the Fathers of the Order of Charity
of the Irish Province, the Rosminian Fathers (IC). On 24th February
1958 the Prefecture was erected to the status of a Diocese.
