Forming a Community of Christ with the Saints

August 27, 2009

During our first all school mass on Wednesday, we commissioned the 2009-2010 Student Council. Those members
are: Megan Jacobsmeyer –President, Emily Nelson – Vice-President, Luis Martinez – Secretary, Hannah Schmickley
– Treasurer, Marie Gardner – Principal's Secretary, Lauren Dixon – Public Relations, Alyssa Williams – Activities
Director, Julie Deibel and Aliyah Wilson – 8th Grade Representatives, Max Goepel and Miles Huber – 7th Grade
Representatives, Shannon Groark and Sydney Porter – 6th Grade Representatives, Ryan Ely and Zachary Weinman –
5th Grade Representatives. Fr. Jim spoke about the special gifts they have and how they can best use those gifts as
they lead us through this school year. I would like to thank Mrs. Dueker and Mrs. Heithaus for carrying out the duties
of monitor for the Student Council.

Spotlight on Arrival/Dismissal Procedure – Please review the procedures in the Handbook for arrival and
dismissal. It is especially important to follow the arrival procedure. When dropping off students in the morning, all cars
should enter from New Halls Ferry Rd. using the church entrance and pull all the way around the gym, toward the field,
forming a line. By pulling up as far as possible, we can get more cars in a position to unload and keep traffic moving.
If you are parking and walking into the building, you must wait until the line of cars has stopped and then
proceed. This is the procedure we have always used for arrival and it has worked out well.

SchoolReach Update – Many parents have thanked us for instituting the new communication system from
SchoolReach. This program was made possible by a donation from the graduating class of '09.
To date four calls
have been made and two email messages sent. The first call was to test the system and went to primary numbers only.
The second call was to notify you that the beginning of school would be delayed. This call went to both primary
numbers and secondary numbers. The third call was a reminder asking that you turn in September lunch forms on Aug.
20
th, 21st, or on Sunday Aug. 23 but no later than Aug. 24th at noon. This reminder was either sent to your primary
number, your email, or both if that is how you indicated you'd like to receive messages when you filled out your
SchoolReach form. The final message was also a reminder and sent as above.
When the messages are sent a printout
indicates if the calls were answered live, by machine, busy, no answer, or if the call failed. During the Open House
reminder message only eleven families did not receive the message. If you have an answering machine, the system rings
the phone for up to forty seconds. If your machine is set to ring longer than four rings, you did not get the message.
One problem that arose was that calls were being answered "live" at a residence, but the message was not being
passed along to an adult. The reminder messages were sent out at approximately 6:15 pm in hopes that parents might
be home from work to take the call.
Now that we have tested the system numerous times, you may want to make
some changes in how you receive your reminder messages. If you would prefer to have your reminders sent to your
cell phone or you'd like to add an email address, please send a note to Mrs. Kay indicating the change. For snow days
we can leave the home number as your primary number. In the case of an emergency we would call both the primary
and secondary numbers. This change would only apply to reminder messages.
If you received a form on Tuesday
please return it ASAP. Until these forms are received you can only be contacted at a home number.

In addition to donating the money for the SchoolReach Program, the graduating class of '09 also purchased a
SMARTboard and projector and made a donation to the Nancy Nolle Scholarship Fund. We greatly appreciate their
generosity.

Reminder – All St. Norbert faculty and staff members as well as all volunteers within the school shall be required to
have taken the
"Protecting God's Children" program through the Archdiocese. All faculty and staff, as well as
volunteers, shall also be required to complete the
Family Care Safety Registry form from the Missouri Department
of Health and Senior Services as well as the
Ethical Code of Conduct form. The "Protecting God's Children"
program will be offered at St. Norbert Catholic Church on Wed., Sept. 2 at 7:00 p.m. Please call the rectory at 314-
837-3814 to register. Packets to complete the other portions of the Safe Environment Program are available in the
office.

There is a minor change in the procedure for ordering lunches. I have attached the new procedure and ask you to
replace the one in the handbook with the new one. We appreciate your cooperation in adjusting to the new program.

The fax number in the handbook is also incorrect. It should read 314-839-3053. Jennifer Jost, the uniform exchange
volunteer is listed in the handbook but not her phone number. You can reach Jennifer at 314.831.3622.

If you attend our weekly liturgies on a regular basis and are a Eucharistic Minister, please let Ms. Poniewaz know so
she can make out a schedule. I thank Ms. Poniewaz for taking on this responsibility again this year.

Physicals are required for all new students and previously enrolled students in Grades 3 and 6. Students are not
permitted to attend school if immunizations are not current. To avoid a disruption of your child's attendance, please
attend to these requirements.

Everyone should have their 2009-2010 Handbook by now. It is very important for you to read the handbook before
signing the form stating you have read the handbook. Please return this form no later than Monday, Aug. 31st. The
policies and procedures listed in the handbook govern how we address issues that arise during the year. It is important
that we are all on the same page. If you did not get a handbook or need another one, please contact the school office.

If you are interested in your child taking instrumental lessons this year after school, Palmer Music is holding a parent
meeting next Wednesday, September 2nd at 7pm in the Music Room.

And so we begin a new school year. For some of you this is your first experience with school, for some it is your last;
at least here at St. Norbert. The rest of you are somewhere in the middle, always a comfortable place to be. As we all
work together to meet the needs of the students at St. Norbert, let us pray for strength and inspiration to fulfill this most
important and beautiful task.

Mrs. Pamela Gilbert
