THE GRASSMARKET AND HUNTER'S CLOSE

A general view of the Grassmarket looking east from the foot of the Vennel Steps which connect the west end of the Grassmarket to Lauriston Place partly following the course of the ancient Flodden Wall.
High above the Grassmarket you see the spire of what was the Tolbooth Church and the General Assembly Hall of the Church of Scotland. Built in 1839-1844 by James Gillespie Graham and AWN Pugin, it is now The Hub - headquarters of the Edinburgh International Festival.

The Grassmarket further east. On a warm, sunny day, it is possible to imagine that this could be an Italian piazza - hence the attraction of this area to the immigrant Italians. The Grassmarket further east
The north side of the Grassmarket in May with the sun shining and people sitting outside the pubs and cafes. North Side of the Grassmarket on a sunny May day.
Hunter's Close. The close now gives access to the Grassmarket Campus of Edinburgh College of Art but once would have given access to more dwellings and a brewery. Hunter's Close
