Glossary of Architectural Terms

APSE
Large semi circular recess, arched or dome-roofed
BALUSTER
Short pillar with curving outline; post supporting a rail
CHANCEL
Part of the church near the altar; reserved for clergy, ministers and choir; usually enclosed.
NARTHEX
Railed-off western porch*. In early Christian times, area used by catechuments and penitents.
NAVE
Main body of church from (usually) the West end to the Chancel.
PEDIMENT
Triangular part crowning the front of the building in Grecian style, especially over the portico.
PILASTER
Rectangular column, especiall one engaged into the wall.
SANCTUARY
Part of the Chancel between the altar rails (if they exist) and the East window or the rear wall; area containing the high altar.
SWAG
Moulded festoon of flowers, etc; decorative feature in a frieze.
ENTABLATURE
Area above columns or pilasters that include frieze, cornice, architrave.

* Traditionally a church is built on a East-West axis: altar is at the East, entrance is at the West end. Because of the lie of the land, our church is on the reverse axis: entrance at East, altar at the West.
