BAPTISM

Baptism For Infants And Children Under Age 7
Welcome to St. Patrick's Baptismal preparation program! We look forward to getting to know you and preparing with you for the celebration of your child's Baptism. Baptism, the sacrament of new life in Christ, is the gateway to all the other sacraments and the foundation of our life in Christ and in the world. It is a profound gift and one, which must be understood. Parents choosing Baptism for their child or children under age 7 should call the parish office to register for the Baptismal preparation classes. If you are not a registered member of St. Patrick's Parish we ask that you come to the office and register at this time. Both the parents AND Godparents are required to attend preparation classes unless they have attended one previously at St. Patrick's Parish (or another parish, see below) within the past 2 years. The classes are for ADULTS ONLY please.

These preparation classes occur during two 2-hour sessions on a weekday evening. The times and dates will be specified by the couple teaching the classes each month. Class attendance must be reserved and confirmed by the 5th of the month in which the baptism will take place. Godparent Selection: The role of a sponsor, or Godparent, is very important. It is the Godparent's duty to help the baptized to lead a Christian life in harmony with baptism and to faithfully fulfill the obligations connected with it; thus, the godparents also must be living a life in harmony with the faith. The Church therefore requires that a Godparent be at least sixteen years old, and a practicing Catholic who has been confirmed and has already received the sacrament of the Eucharist. One male, or one female, or one of each sex may be chosen. A baptized person who belongs to a non-Catholic ecclesial community may not be admitted except as a witness to baptism, and together with a Catholic godparent.

Godparent Letters: Because of the importance of Godparents in the life of the baptized, if the Godparents you select are not members of St. Patrick's Parish, we require a letter or certificate from their Pastor stating that they are active, participating members of their faith community and have attended their Baptismal preparation classes within the past two years. This letter should arrive at the parish office (the address is on the front of this booklet) at least one week prior to the actual Baptism.

Schedule: Baptisms are celebrated at the 5:30 PM Saturday Vigil Mass and the 11:00 AM Sunday Mass on the last weekend of the month, except during Lent. Baptismal preparation classes are still held during Lent, however the Baptisms will be celebrated at Easter.

Please call Parish office for Baptismal prep. Baptism For Persons Age 7 And Older For school age children: Parish policy requires attendance in a general program (St. Patrick School or Religious Education) for one year and then continuing with that general program the following year and also participation in Sacrament Preparation which will include Baptism and Reconciliation, Confirmation, and Eucharist if the child is at least in the 2nd grade.

Baptism For Adults

Adults desiring Baptism participate in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) program of preparation.

RECONCILIATION, CONFIRMATION, FIRST EUCHARIST

2nd Grade And Older Children
Parish policy requires attendance in a general program (St. Patrick School or Religious Education) for one year and then continuing with that general program the following year and also participation in Sacramental Preparation, which is a family based program. Reconciliation preparation begins in September with the reception of the sacrament in November. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is presented in a positive approach as the loving embrace of an ever- welcoming Father who continuously loves us in spite of our sinfulness. Confirmation: In the Spokane Diocese, as of June 2000, the sacrament of Confirmation has been put in restored order as it was in the early church up until 1910. It precedes First Eucharist as a sacrament of initiation. Anyone preparing for First Eucharist will also prepare and receive Confirmation. Those that have previously received the Eucharist, will be encouraged to complete their sacraments of Initiation.

First Eucharist preparation occurs along with Confirmation preparation (see above) and begins usually in January and reception is after Easter in the spring. There are parent & child meetings to enrich and reinforce the materials that are done at home. Adults

Adults Adults who are baptized Christians and wish to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church, and baptized Catholics who have not received their First Eucharist, or who are receiving Communion but have not been confirmed, participate in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) program of preparation.

MARRIAGE

Couples wishing to celebrate the sacrament of Matrimony should call the office to schedule an appointment with a priest at least six months prior to an anticipated wedding. No wedding date can be scheduled until the couple has met with a priest. The priest will arrange an appropriate pre matrimonial preparation program with the couple. They will normally be prepared by Deacon Gary and Pat Franz.

Marriage is a commitment that two people make to one another. This is a very serious commitment, and demands that the people entering into marriage spend some time in prayer and reflection before they make such a step. This is what the marriage preparation program is about. It is an opportunity for you, as a couple, to spend some time discussing strengths and weaknesses that you may have as a couple, and to reflect on if you can accept your future spouse with his or her strengths a well as weaknesses.

Requirements

  1. You will need to present your certificates of Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion. If they are not available, please advise the priest at the first meeting.
  2. Two weeks before the wedding date, obtain your Marriage License at the Franklin County Courthouse.
  3. Bring to the office a letter or certificate of your participation in an approved pre-matrimonial preparation program.
  4. Two weeks before the wedding date, bring to the office your donation of $150.00 or more for the expenses of the Church.

Guidelines for the Wedding Ceremony
Please consult the brochure on Weddings at St. Patrick's for more detailed information.

  1. The wedding ceremony is a celebration of the church. It is prayer and liturgy. In planning a wedding the focus should be on prayer,
  2. Stipends are a donation made to the parish on the occasion of a wedding. This does not go to the priest, but rather helps to cover the expenses of the building. This is an offering, and we don't have set prices. Some parishes recommend 10 % of the cost of the wedding. At St. Patrick's $150.00 to $200.00 is an average, if you wish to give more, we are grateful for your consideration and generosity.
  3. The normal times for weddings on Saturdays are: 11:00 a.m. (you may schedule for an earlier hour if you'd like, in consultation with the priest) and 2:00 p.m. If yours is the only wedding of the day (this is known 6 weeks before the date), you may, in consultation with the priest, schedule for any hour you'd like before 2:00. If there are 2 weddings in one day, the following guidelines apply: The party from the morning wedding must be out of the church building by 1:00 p.m.; at 1:00 p.m. the building is available for the afternoon wedding (you may, of course, come earlier to dress, etc.). The afternoon wedding party must be out of the building before 4:00 p.m.
  4. If you desire to have music at your wedding, you make arrangements directly with the musicians. The parish office can provide you with a list of available musicians.

We hope that these guidelines help you in planning your wedding. If we can be of further assistance or if you have any questions, please talk it over with the priest who is assisting you with your marriage preparation and/or wedding ceremony. Thank you for your cooperation.
