St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church

St. Catherine Community Center
An outreach ministry of Saint Catherine of Siena
Catholic Church

Catholics on the Southside of Shreveport, Louisiana, under the patronage of Saint Catherine of Siena, first gathered as a worshipping community during the early 1920s. However, it was not until 1938 that this mission, entrusted to the care of the Jesuits at Saint John Berchmans Church, became a parish in its own right.

However, this Catholic community has had a significant impact its neighborhood from its very beginning. Not all of the attention it received was welcome. Older Parishioners still recall spending many of their nights guarding the lumber for the first church so that the Ku Klux Klan could not burn it. Succeeding years brought far more favorable notice in this predominantly Protestant area.

In time, activities at Saint Catherine of Siena Catholic Church became a focal point of life for the Cedar Grove community. Saint Catherine of Siena Catholic Church has been a vital force for good in this community and hopes to continue to extend itself in service in a variety of ways. For 30 years the church operated an elementary school providing a quality education to students throughout Shreveport. The well-maintained facilities include 14 large classrooms, several offices, extensive grounds for playing fields, a large kitchen and an auditorium. Since 1994 these facilitirs have housed the extensive programs and services ot the Saint Catherine Community Center.
