WANTED- A FEW GOOD MEN and WOMEN

Just as the United States Marines say in recruitment ads, we in Cursillo are out to recruit future LEADERS for Christ. When we look for these potential candidates we should take this responsibility seriously. "The purpose (or goal) of the Movement is to make Christian community possible in neighborhoods, parishes, work situations and other places where people live the greater part of their lives. It makes possible for anyone in the world to live a Christian life in a natural way." (Leaders' Manual-page 13.)

As the purpose of sponsoring is to bring a change in the environment, you should have a plan on how you are going to do this. Part of your plan would include identifying those individuals that have the talent to bring about a change and bring Jesus into their environments.

Know your candidate well.
Sponsoring your candidate is not a haphazard circumstance. It should be a deliberate act to bring Jesus into the World. Therefore, you should know your candidates very well. If they are married, you should know their spouse as well. Your candidates will become the agents for change in their families, work situations, neighborhood, social gatherings, etc. Your candidates will become active participants in Group Reunion, Ultreya and Grouping. Your candidates will become part of the Christian community that links together with others to bring Jesus to the world. If you are sponsoring a married couple, it is important that both spouses attend the Cursillo weekend. It is not recommended to sponsor a couple who are not willing to make the consecutive Cursillo weekends.

Candidates who should be considered:

-Individuals who are truly the backbone of their environments.
-One's who have a deep personality and are able to make their own decisions and are interiorly motivated.
-They are natural leaders.

Candidates who "can" go:

-Anyone who is eligible to receive the Sacraments.
-The ordinary Catholic-one trying to live the Catholic life as best they know.

Candidates who cannot or should not go:

-Those who have a physiological or emotional problem.
-Those who have a deep drinking, drug or moral problem.
-Those who have a major marital problem.

Candidates age and physical condition:

-Youthful candidates are encouraged. They should have a sufficient life experiences to integrate the Cursillo message into their lives.
-Seniors should be carefully considered due to the possible physical strain of the weekend at Whispering Winds. The camp is at an elevation of 4,500 feet and climbing of the gradual hills could possibly be a problem.
- Additionally consideration has to be made for the bunk beds and the
possibility of inclement weather.

What a candidate should bring on a weekend…

Sleeping bag or linens, earplugs, pillow, an extra blanket, towels, wash cloth, a warm jacket, comfortable shoes and clothing, and toiletries. Label or tag all luggage prior to leavinghome.

A sipper bottle for water, insect repellent, a flashlight and sunscreen are essential items.

Asthma, Allergy or any medication that you would typically need. Bee sting antidote if you are allergic, etc.

Application process:

-Obtain a current application. (Note the expiration date on the bottom of
form.) Use original color coded candidate sponsor and candidate application forms. (This makes it MUCH easier to process the forms.)
-Have the candidate (candidates if married) COMPLETELY fill out the blue Candidate application form.
-The sponsor is to fill out completely one gold colored sponsor sheet for each candidate. TWO GOLD SHEETS ARE REQUIRED IF IT IS A MARRIED COUPLE.
-Send the completed application together with a $20.00 processing fee ($40.00 if a married couple) to

PRE-CURSILLO COMMITTEE
2025 Chalcedony St.
San Diego, CA. 92109

-Applications are processed on a first come, first serve basis. The earlier an application is received the sooner the Pre-Cursillo Committee can act on it. HOWEVER, DO TO LIMITED SPACE ON THE WEEKENDS, PLEASE DO NOT PROMISE YOUR CANDIDATE A SPECIFIC WEEKEND.

Questions:

-Obtain applications from any Ultreya or contact Danielle or Pat McCay through Email at precursillosd@gmail.com.

Would you like to register to work a Cursillo weekend?

A message on Team Participation from Lay Director Jim Koed (1/10/03)

Cursillo has a long and exciting history in San Diego. Whether you have been
involved for twenty years or six months, the prospect of working a Cursillo
weekend brings feelings of great joy and anticipation. However, we must all remember that it is a privilege to work a team, not a given right. We are invited to work by the team coordinator, the rector/rectora, who are invited to lead under the guidelines presented by the Secretariat. This team only exists to serve our Lord Jesus, by bringing about a transition or change in the candidates He
has chosen so that they might become greater disciples for Him. We select a "team of leaders" to represent this community as a witness to the candidates of how a community of Christian Leaders can serve God and His people. This team exists to pray, sacrifice and to serve. This and all future teams must be comprised of Christian Leaders. Are you a Christian Leader? How would we know? Who is to say whether you are or are not? Each of you is your own best judge. You know that Jesus speaks to you through your conscience. For the majority in this community, these are easy questions with positive answers and for some additional discernment is necessary.

Cursillo is a movement within our Catholic Church. We operate under the guidelines of our Bishop, who is our local authority for the Church. All Cursillo teams must present themselves as examples of Catholic leadership. Therefore, all teams members must be leading lives, to the best of their
abilities, under the guidelines of the doctrines of the Catholic Church. If any of us, for any reason, are not making decisions to live within the guidelines of the Church, we need to step back from this team and all future teams, until we have committed ourselves to live within the boundaries of
our Church. Some examples of not making good Catholic decisions would be, but not limited to, leading sinful lives which keeps us from participating in the Sacraments. Placing ourselves in personal or professional relationships contrary to Church law; for instance, sexual activity outside
of a marriage or being married outside the church with no active attempts to having that union blessed by the Church. Being involved with business or investments, which profess amoral standards or conditions. I ask each one of you tonight, to look into yourselves, into your daily personal decisions,
and determine if you, at this point in your life, are making good Catholic decisions. Are you, to the best of your abilities, in full compliance with the Church? If not, take the time now, instead of working this team, to begin the process of committing fully to Jesus through His Church. Then come
back, at some time in the future, and join us again. We have many wonderful clergy members within this movement eagerly waiting to help and guide you on this journey. Seek them out.

The second part of this leadership evaluation is within Cursillo. Are you a leader in Cursillo?

The most basic element of participation in Cursillo is a regular group reunion. Are you grouping on a regular basis? If not, please step back from this team and spend this time beginning the grouping process. Grouping is what keeps the meaning of Cursillo alive within each of us. It is what keeps
us accountable within the movement. Without grouping, we cannot call ourselves leaders in Cursillo. Are you attending Ultreya on a fairly regular basis? Ultreya is where we witness to the community our successes and failures to inspire and instruct others in our daily work for Jesus. This
witness is a critical component to Cursillo.

Are you committed to the method and purpose of Cursillo? Are you actively looking at all your daily environments to find others that can help you create a better environment for the presence of Jesus? Are you working on creating and guiding that Christian community in these environments? Cursillo calls us to a higher standard. We must be sure this "higher standard" is maintained on our weekend teams.

As the Lay Director of this movement, my promise to you and our Bishop, is to help Cursillo grow and prosper within our diocese while maintaining the integrity of what makes this movement guided by the Holy Spirit, so unique. The Cursillo team is our most visible arm of this movement. It must be true
to what Cursillo is and stands for. I invite all of you to come share your gifts with this team, if after searching your own heart, mind and soul, you feel you are living these basic standards.

I pray we can work together and with the guidance of our Lord Jesus and the gifts of the Holy spirit, this Cursillo movement of the Diocese of San Diego can give honor to God our Father. God bless you.
