UPDATE ON THE MARY STATUE CAMPAIGN
Remember: RESERVE THE DATE of Saturday 16 August 2008!  On that date we will have the unveiling of the statue in its newly designed site followed by a dedication Mass.  Formal invitations will be sent to all donors in early July.
Last month, Peggy and I, along with Cursillista site designer Larry Sheehan visited artist Beverly Paddleford and the Eagle Foundry in Lander, Wyoming.  By the time we arrived Beverly had already finished sculpting our 1 & 1/8th life size "Mary."  It had been moved from her studio to the foundry where mold making and the lost wax process of casting bronze monuments of this size was already underway.  It was a fascinating two day visit.  We learned that for a work of this size we should refer to it as a monument, not a statue.  Although our Mary was already encased in a variety of ceramic mold pieces, we were able to tour the foundry and view different works at each step in the process.  We were impressed by the complexity involved in casting monuments of this size and the artistic skill required to produce such beautiful work.  The Eagle Foundry run by Monte Paddleford has cast over 1,000 monuments for artists worldwide, and too many small pieces to count.  We also visited their Eagle Bronze Gallery.  Should any of you visit Lander, their Gallery in town is a most impressive and worthwhile place to visit.  Some of her works are on display there as well as those of other known artists.
We reviewed the grotto site design with Beverly and Monte and worked out various logistics concerning the installation.  The foundry remains on schedule for delivery to the camp on 13 June.  Meanwhile, we are pressing to have the concrete slab constructed and overlaid with Pennsylvania Bluestone by that date. Once the statue is in place work can begin in earnest on completing the site in preparation for gifting the monument honoring Mary to Whispering Winds.  We are deeply grateful to all who have donated money and to those who have come forward to donate their skilled labor and materials. We are still looking for someone with good carpentry skills to build four prayer benches to arrange around the foot of the statue.
As reported last month, any additional donations received will be utilized to enhance the Grotto site with plantings and construction materials.  Whispering Winds has budgeted $10,000 for the site, but the cost of basic materials and some contract labor will exceed that amount.
When this campaign began about one year ago we titled the monument, "Mary and the Crown of Thorns."  Upon reflection we have changed the title to simply "Mary", with the sub title "from Cana to Calvary."  The water jars to the left of Mary represent the water jars at Cana when Mary told the stewards: "Do whatever he tells you."  Thus began Jesus' public ministry.  As John's Gospel says: "and his disciples believed in him."  The crown of thorns, held to Mary's breast, the breast that once nursed her baby son, are the same crown of thorns that pierced the head of her son at Calvary.  In Mary's expression we see grief, forgiveness and compassion.  She extends her hand to us inviting us to come to her son.
Once again we thank you for your donations of time, talent and treasure.  And we ask for your continued prayers as we anticipate this beautiful monument to the honor of Mary at Whispering Winds.
In HIS love and service, George & Peggy Anderson
A MESSAGE FROM CURSILLISTA DAVE LYONS
De Colores, Brothers and Sisters in Christ....
The reason for this email is to ask for your help.
I am working with Martin Rosales from Whispering Winds to organize a diocesan-wide Men's Retreat weekend on Nov 21-23 (the weekend before Thanksgiving).
Our goal is to have a minimum of 80 men attend the retreat. The anticipated theme is "Welcome Home."
Here's what I am asking for your help with. I want to find all of the SD County parishes that have an existing Men's group, and to get the contact information for those groups' leaders. Names, email addresses and/or phone #s. is all I need. I'll take it from there.
I would appreciate your help in finding these men by the 1st week in May.
Any assistance you can give me is greatly appreciated....
God bless you and your families...

Whispering Winds
This summer, Whispering Winds and the Whispering Winds Women's Auxiliary are hosting our first ever Single-parent Family Camp. Whispering Winds was originally founded to support and uphold the family through camping, and we are blessed with the opportunity to reach out to a wider variety of families this summer. We are seeing a huge need within our Church to embrace and support single-parent families.

Family Camp is a weekend-long program, beginning early Friday evening and ending Sunday afternoon. This summer our theme, There's No Place Like Home, will focus on exploring how "home" factors into our spiritual journeys - as individuals, families, and communities - with "The Yellow Brick Road" by Fr. William Bausch. Family Camp weekends include a full Catholic program and Mass, two overnights, six meals, free child care, and activities for all ages, including archery, miniature golf, water games, climbing wall, zip lines, and 20% off fishing permits and boat rentals at Lake Cuyamaca. This year we are partnering with Integrity Stables to offer horseback riding on-site as well!

Due to the generosity of the Whispering Winds Women's Auxiliary, we are able to offer special, greatly discounted rates for Single-parent Family Camp in the hopes that a larger number of families may be reached. We also have scholarships available online at www.whisperingwinds.org.
We are also offering a new Middle School Camp, similar to our Kids Camps but custom-tailored to Middle School students. This special program is Tuesday-Thursday evening, with a family BBQ at the close of the event. St. Brigid's Young Adult ministry is excited to bring their enthusiasm and faith in ministry to young teens during this event.

Information about these, and all of our programs, can be found online at www.whisperingwinds.org.

Thank you for your prayer for and support of our campers!
