SCHOOL OF LEADERS

Dearest Cursillistas:

This is a reminder that Thursday night, April 3 at 6:30 p.m. is the School of Leaders North at Jim Koed's home in Escondido. We hope that all of you who live in the North County or who just like to enjoy the spirit of the Lord in the loving setting of a Cursillista's home will attend.

What a great way to celebrate the week before the beginning of 250 then 251! Deacon Mitch Rennix will give this month's talk, he says it's on rebuilding Ford automatic transmissions. We're sure he can work that into Blessed are the Peacemakers! If any one can, Deacon Mitch can!

And remember, next Monday, April 7 is School of Leaders Central at the Mission San Diego, also at 6:30 p.m.

See you there!

DeColores

Glenn and Sandra

LIAM HEARNE UPDATE

March 13, 2008

So sorry we have been out of touch for so long. You all have been so good about asking how Liam is and keeping him in your prayers. Liam has been doing well but not without a few stressful complications along the road. All the daily ups and downs sometimes makes it difficult to give an accurate update. The good news is that his new liver is doing great. His medical team has even taken him off or reduced the dosing on several of the medications he was taking. He still has his wonderful smile and great spirit about him.

On the "that stinks" side of the ledger he is still not eating, but is being feed through his feeding tube. He still has severe nausea and vomiting once or two twice a day, every day. God bless him… it must be so miserable. He is fighting a lung infection with IV antibiotics which ended a week ago. His blood work from Monday indicates that he is harboring a new virus, not remembering which one it is??? Nothing they can do about it at the moment but the Doc’s will keep an eye on it.

Now… for the Latest in "Liam Miracles". The Tuesday before last, Liam was admitted into the hospital to start his IV antibiotics to fight a festering lung infection. The morning after he started IV’s and while still in the hospital Liam had, what the doctors on the floor were calling, for 48 excruciating hours, a stoke. The droopy face, numbness head to toe on his right side, unable to communicate or understand direction, his personality completely gone. Lights out, gone. In all of Liam’s 16 years of medical care this was the hardest 48 hours for us, his parents. Liam has always had his bright personality, spirit, sense of humor and positive attitude, glistening smile, penetrating eyes and warm hugs. All that was all gone. Liam’s strengths have always been in his confidence and ability to love and be loved. Our hearts break for families and loved ones of children that are faced with these types of mental illnesses. We prayed and Liam’s faith community prayed, that we would all once again experience Liam’s loving personality, but how much more could this poor boy take? We became aware of the miracle Thursday afternoon when the results of his several scans… MRI, CT and contrast scans, returned showing no permanent damage and by Friday night he was 100% back to himself, even his sense of humor as to what he remembered about the stroke.

Successful milestone! On Tuesday (3/11/08) Liam and Dad were able to experience yet another wish list item. Snowboarding was on the top of Liam’s post transplant "things to do when I get out", list. Among other things, before his transplant, Liam’s medical team determined snowboarding to be too dangerous for his condition. With the new liver, he was given the green light. As you could imagine the altitude and endurance were both major factors but that didn’t stop Liam from enjoying a two hour lesson and 2 ½ runs down the beginners training slope at Snow Summit in our local mountains. It was an epic day for both Dad and Liam, one that will remain with the two for them forever. What a difference a week makes!

Yesterday (3/14/08) was Liam’s second day back to school. He was full of excitement to be back with his friends and back to some sense of normalcy with his life. Now for the "That’s just not right, give the kid a break" moment. We can only imagine how difficult it must be for a 16 year old boy, two years behind in grade, to be out of school, especially High School, for such a long period of time and then come back and try to fit in… especially difficult to do while wearing a medical pump on your back with a feeding tube attached to your abdomen. By the way, we are sure Liam is handling this much better than we would in the same scenario. Anyhow, at the end of second period with the entire student body rushing to their next class, there is Liam, throwing up in a planter so violently that he throws up his feeding tube. 24 inches of medical tubing hanging out of his mouth, gagging him while onlookers wondered what was going on. The length of tubing was the tube leading from his feeding port to his lower intestine, his ‘J’ tube. So, with the medical tube hanging out his mouth and the opposite end still attached to the inside of his stomach, what is a person to do? Liam was able to call over a district employee that had a cart with scissors on it. Liam used the scissors to cut the end of the tube at his mouth and then swallow the remaining portion back into his stomach. Wow, what a stud! Long story short, Liam spent the rest of the day (10 hours)at Children’s Hospital in surgery and recovery getting a new feeding tube installed. We are so proud of the calm that Liam had throughout the entire situation.

That’s Liam’s life for the past three weeks in a nut shell. On to tomorrow! What an exciting life we lead. God has certainly blessed us with the living testimony of the power of prayer and the Hope of salvation. Liam continues to show us what true faith and perseverance look like.

As always, we thank you for your continued love, support and prayers.

Bill, Nancy, Liam & Shannon
