Proposition 22: Protect Marriage - Deacon Mitch Rennix
California has a chance to enshrine the common-sense definition of marriage in its state constitution in November 2008 . . . but only if Californians come together and qualify a constitutional amendment by collecting 1.1 Million signatures by April. The California Marriage Amendment would add to the state constitution the same language as Proposition 22, which California voters overwhelmingly approved as a statute in 2000: "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California."
In the face of an imminent California Supreme Court decision that could impose same-sex marriage on the our State, the National Organization for Marriage has focused its efforts on making sure that Californian's have the chance to decide the future of marriage in November. We as members of the San Diego Cursillo Christian Community must do whatever we can do to further this Godly and critical cause. Our Faith and our core values are being challenged at a level never seen before. Google NOM California and take a look at the details, you will then have the facts and a plan of action. Gather signatures at your parish (with the permission of your priest) and turn them in to NOM asap. Lidia and I will be at Team School with the petitions and an instruction sheet. Please contact us with any questions at mrennix@cox.net or lrennix@cox.net
God bless you...

ANNUAL GRAND ULTREYA
Here is my summary of the Interdenominational Grand Ultreya held February 16, 2008.
One Family Praising the Lord!
Five three day weekend communities praised the Lord on Saturday, February 16. We met at our Lady of Grace Roman Catholic Church in El Cajon. Over 80 people participated this year, over twice as many as in 2006! We wanted to show Christian unity, love of Jesus, show Christian witness, communities to share. We did all that. Just some of the many compliments about the day were "Fun!" "Energy filled!" "Spirit-filled!" "Wonderful!" "We should have this every year!" from a Methodist, "Great job!" from an Episcopalian. "Thank goodness you had childcare, otherwise we could not have come," from a Roman Catholic.
Roman Catholics, Methodists, Episcopalians, Kairos, and Kairos Outside members joined in unity singing praises to Jesus. The six musicians led many rousing songs that had everyone singing, raising hands, and dancing!
One witness speaker, Joy Wolf, from the Episcopal Community, gave a passionate talk about how she shared her faith at work and keeps focused on Jesus every day. The second witness speaker was Margaret Shankle from the Methodist community. Her dad is the Lay Director. She is a confident and composed speaker, a 17 year old senior, and a member of Chrysalis, a Christian youth group. Her story was about how so many teenagers share their love of the Lord together and in schools. She received a standing ovation.
Tim Lyons, from the Episcopal Community and Kairos, catered the delicious lasagna and salad meal. He also provided sodas, sauces, toasted French bread, and vanilla ice cream!
If you had to miss it, plan now to join us in 2010!
Peace, Love, and Joy,
Ted Parsons
Episcopal Master of Ceremonies and
4th Day Co-chair

Philip Rivers was born on the feast of the Immaculate Conception, December 8, 1981 in Decatur, Alabama. He is named after Philip the Apostle. He married his longtime girlfriend, Tiffany. They currently have three little girls with a new baby on the way. As a youngster, Rivers worked as a water boy at Decatur High School where his dad was the head coach of the football team. He wears number 17 in honor of his father, Steve, who wore the same number in high school. Rivers has worn it since the ninth grade. Rivers' number was retired before his final home game at North Carolina State. His younger brother Stephen wishes to follow in his brother's footsteps. Come and hear this exceptionally gifted young man share how strong his faith and love of family have balanced his fame as an NFL quarter back. You can see the strength of a man through his favorite scripture which is never give up on or off the field. His favorite scripture is Galatians 6:9, "Let us not grow tired of doing good, for in due time we shall reap our harvest, if we do not give up."

Greetings from Iraq!
I'm settling in well over here. We're actually set up pretty nice out here. It helps that US forces have been in this country for the last 4 years, so all the creature comforts have been set up. I eat great, sleep on a bed with a mattress, workout everyday, and stay busy working the other 14 hours a day. I work 7 days/week. I wouldn't know what to do with myself if I did have a day off. There's not much else to do here.
The situation over here has improved tremendously over the last year.
The Iraqis are pulling themselves together and striving to build a government that can support and secure the people of Iraq. They are the reason for the recent decline in casualties. They have decided to pull together to make a better life for themselves. It certainly helped that we were here (with the 'surge forces') to be able to put them over the top of the insurgency. I'm proud to be a part of the rebuilding here. I see the improvements we're making here everyday. I appreciate the support of every American who's kept their faith in our military leadership to accomplish the mission out here. Our government has been very supportive as well about getting us whatever we need. I'm truly proud to say that I'm an American serving in the best military fighting force in the world. I know this isn't what's in the news. You here about every casualty we have here, but fail to hear about the schools, government buildings, power plants, oil pipelines/refineries, etc... that we're building for the people of Iraq. You don't see the smiles on the kids faces as they play in the streets. There are many other fine examples of success and improvements over here.
Anyway, this is not a paid political announcement. I just found myself sitting here at our internet cafe and typing what came to mind. Once again thanks for your support and don't pass up that opportunity to thank the many fine young men and women serving in our military. They are a true bunch of professionals who willing put their lives on the line each time they go outside the wire....I however am just a staff pogue who sits behind a computer and orchestrates emails to ensure the war fighter gets what he needs.
May God Bless you all. Have a great Valentine's day. I look forward to seeing you all next year.
Semper Fidelis,
Alton Cochran (Cursillo 148)

Praise God, surgery went well. Dad (Dn Bob Mueller) is in ICU and was still sleeping when I left. His color looks totally normal which really surprised me and his renal count is at a 2 which the nurse seemed pleased by (I'm not sure what it means except that his kidneys seem to be kicking in). He's still intibated until he wakes up and can breathe on his own. Things look really good.
Thank you for your prayers-how blessed are we to have so many wonderful prayer warriors in our corner!!!
All Glory and Honor to You Father!!!!

Here is an update on the Lund Family:
Joseph Lund got a good report from the cardiologist earlier in January. His aorta still has a narrowing, but the blood flow is good enough to have him not have to visit for 3 months. Thanks to all who offered prayers for his family and doctors! He did have a surgery last week to remove nasal tubes (a separate issue) that kept his breathing passages open. He's now six months old, and still has surgeries ahead of him, but for now he is well and his family is pleased and so thankful for the prayers and support they have consistently received.

Please pray for my mother Judy Buckley, who will have outpatient arthroscopic surgery Thursday February 7, at 7:30am, to repair ligament damage she suffered when she fell and dislocated her shoulder in the fall. She asks that we pray for her surgeon and anesthesiologists, and that she comes through it well.
Thank you!

Friends of Sam Trozzo,
I just talked to Sam and he wants to thank the Carmelite Sisters and everyone who is praying for him.
Tell them "It's working!" he said.
His last Radiation Treatment was on February 7th and he is feeling pretty good right now and making progress. The pain and burning sensation from the Radiation Treatments is just about gone now, and he will have to send in a blood sample to his doctor here in San Diego in one week.
The procedure he had was very precise where they put a marker in the prostate so the radiation can hone in on just that area. They use a lot of physics and mark off the entire prostate in their computer and don't have to radiate all the area surrounding the cancer.
They can concentrate the treatment in 5 days instead of 40 days which eliminates a lot of error, pain, burning and discomfort. Right now he is tired and sleeping a lot but that is one of the side effects of the treatment.
Sam is hopeful that by the 1st week of March he will be close to 100%.
Please keep the prayers coming his way and he is so thankful for them
God bless Sam and you,
Don Kojis

WHISPERING WINDS NEWS
Dear Friends of Whispering Winds,
In this season of repentance, I pray that we each experience the joy of God's mercy and forgiveness.
From Marist Messenger via catholicweekly.com : Lent can be more than a time of fasting, it can be a season of feasting. We can use Lent to fast from certain things and to feast on others. It is a season in which we can:
Fast from judging others; feast on the Christ dwelling in them.
Fast from emphasis on differences; feast on the unity of life.
Fast from apparent darkness; feast on the reality of light.
Fast from thoughts of illness; feast on the healing power of God.
Fast from words that pollute; feast on phrases that purify.
Fast from discontent; feast on gratitude.
Fast from anger; feast on patience.
Fast from pessimism; feast on optimism.
Fast from worry; feast on divine order.
Fast from complaining; feast on appreciation.
Fast from negatives; feast on affirmatives.
Fast from unrelenting pressures; feast on unceasing prayer.
Fast from hostility; feast on non-resistance.
Fast from bitterness; feast on forgiveness.
Fast from self-concern; feast on compassion for others.
Fast from personal anxiety; feast on eternal truth.
Fast from discouragements; feast on hope.
Fast from facts that depress; feast on verities that uplift.
Fast from lethargy; feast on enthusiasm.
Fast from thoughts that weaken; feast on promises that inspire.
Fast from shadows of sorrow; feast on the sunlight of serenity.
Fast from idle gossip; feast on purposeful silence.
Fast from problems that overwhelm; feast on prayer that under-girds.
Whispering Winds Welcomes Terry Henberger
Terry joined our staff this month as our part-time Director of Programs. She is also the part-time Coordinator of Youth Ministries at St. Timothy in Laguna Niguel, CA, where she manages two Youth Ministers. Terry's first experience at Whispering Winds was as a volunteer when St. Timothy held their first annual landscaping project for the camp. Terry has two daughters, one in high school and one in college, and a Labrador named Tracker. She is an alum of San Diego State, her favorite TV show is "Grey's Anatomy," and in her free time she designs and makes clothing.
Terry's true passion is volunteering to better the lives of children. Terry is an active volunteer within her Laguna Niguel and St. Timothy's communities, including PTA and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). This spring, Terry is taking a mission trip to Peru with her younger daughter. After a weeklong boat tour of the Amazon, she and her daughter will spend a second week in Piura, serving the local parish community.
We are blessed to have Terry as a member of our staff!
