flameWords We Live By

These are quotes from St Clare's writings that inspire our vocation.
-Translation from Briege O'Hare, OSC songs.

First Letter to Agnes

O Blessed poverty,
to those who love her way,
She gives the riches of the endless life of God.

O Holy poverty, to those whose hearts desire her,
She gives the Kingdom of Jesus Christ Our Lord.

Second Letter to Agnes

What you hold, may you always hold,
What you do, may you always do.

Go forward secure and with joy on the path of happiness.
With swift pace and light step move freely
So that even your steps stir no dust.
Let no one dissuade you from living in the spirit of the Lord.

Gaze upon the Lord,
Gaze upon his face;
Gaze upon the One who holds you in his embrace.
Gaze upon his life;
Gaze upon his love;
Gaze upon his coming poor from heaven above.

Third Letter to Agnes

Taste the hidden sweetness that lies within your heart which God has kept for those whose lives are tender within. Place your mind in the softness of life's eternal flow. Place your soul in the brilliance of heaven's endless glow; and love him totally who gave himself for your love, and you will hold him who holds all things in truth.

Fourth Letter of Agnes

Look, look on Jesus, poor and crucified,
look on this Holy One, who for your love has died,
and remember as you contemplate the sacred mysteries, this Jesus whom you gaze upon, loves you most tenderly.

The love which I have for you glows in my heart, and I have inscribed in my soul the happy memory of your love.

Before I say farewell, there is one thing I must add; that you cling with all your heart to the One who is our life. Whose love inflames our love, whose beauty all admire, whose gentleness is peace, our gracious Lord.

Blessing of St Clare

May you always be with God wherever you may be and  may God be with you always..

Always be lovers of your souls and those of all your sisters. And may you always be eager to observe what you have promised the Lord.

Her prayer on her death bed

Go without anxiety my soul for you have a good guide for your journey.
