The League of Women Voters and the Midland Interfaith Council have teamed up once again in an effort to stimulate discussion and educate citizens.  On Sunday, November 8, they are hosting “Elimination of Nuclear Weapons” at the Herbert D. Doan Midland County History Center from 2:00-4:00pm.  Jim Head of Freeland, board chair  of the  World Security Institute will answer questions following the showing of a DVD featuring parts of the Paris gathering of Global Zero that Jim attended in December, 2008.

Global Zero is an international non-partisan effort formed in response to the growing threat of proliferation and nuclear terrorism and dedicated to achieving the phased, verified elimination of all nuclear weapons.  G Z is spearheaded by a group of more than 100 leaders worldwide, including many who have worked at senior levels  with issues of national security such as former heads of state, foreign ministers, defense ministers, national security advisors and more than 20 former top military commanders.     The  20-year  phase-in plan for total elimination will begin in 2010.

On April 1, 2009, Presidents Obama and Medvedev, building on the 1986 Reykjavik meeting of Presidents Reagan and Gorbachev, issued an historic join statement committing their “2 countries to achieving a nuclear free world” beginning with reductions in their own arsenals.  The Wall Street Journal, (1/4/07) carried an article by George P. Shultz, William J. Perry, Henry A. Kissinger and Sam Nunn, “A World Free of Nuclear Weapons”.  In it they stated:  “Nuclear weapons today present tremendous dangers, but also an historic opportunity.  U.S. leadership will be required to take the world to the next state—to a solid consensus for reversing reliance on nuclear weapons globally as a vital contribution to preventing their proliferation into potentially dangerous hands, and ultimately ending them as  threat to the world.”

The gathering is free and open to the public.
