1999 - THE YEAR WE PLAN

Beginning in 1997 some regional groups in the Diocese of Rochester began the mandated work of looking ahead toward the future. Several plans have been developed and groups are already starting on implementation. We, at St. Benedict's and St. Mary's are beginning the process now. I would like to quote the directives set to us by the Diocese of Rochester.

"Each parish/faith community will go through a two-step process. First each parish/faith community will assess itself, identify strengths and weaknesses, identify any major capital needs, and develop a set of three to five major concerns or issues for the next five years. Second, each parish/faith community will join with the other members of its planning group to share information, opportunities, challenges, strengths and weaknesses, five year capital needs, and their major concerns and issues. They will also take into the account the number of priests to be available within each planning group for the next five years. They will identify opportunities for joint strategies, shared resources, and any necessary reconfiguration. They will in corporate these into a five-year plan for the planning group."

Our group is all the parish and institutional ministries (including prisons, hospitals, schools) of Chemung and Schuyler Counties.

We are beginning Part I of the process. Our pastoral council has decided that the following Diocesan Guidelines will have a committee of fifteen people, five members from St. Benedict's and ten members from St. Mary's. We will work together and submit one plan. A list of the names of the people on the committee is provided below. We ask for your prayers so that the process will go well and our faith community will be able to share talents and benefit from others in the region.

As we go through this year we will seek to build avenues of communication. Again, we quote from the Diocesan Directives.

"Throughout the planning process, it will be important to keep the parish informed; to provide avenues for hearing questions, concerns, and ideas; to correct misinformation or misperception; and to respond to feedback. Parishioners at large, as well as staff and members of various parish groups, will want to know what the Planning Team and its sub-teams are doing and why, get questions answered, and find out about the decision -making process."

In order to keep the flow of ideas and information, I ask you to carefully read all information about the planning and be willing to share your ideas and direction. It is only with good communication that the process will be a success.

In His love and mine,

 Fr. Dave

CURRENT STATUS

The Planning Committee is currently in the process of reviewing all available information on the past, current, and future status of all aspects of Parish Life in the Schuyler County Catholic Community. A major part of this will be reviewing the Parish's Strength's and Weaknesses will be the Four Diocesan Synod Goals which are:

  1. To form Catholics in beliefs, Catholic Morality and spirituality throughout life
  2. To advocate for a Consistent Life Ethic
  3. To recognize and value the dignity of women in the Church and society
  4. To promote the formation and growth of Small Christian Communities

It will then identify 3 -5 "Priority Issues" which need to be addressed in the next five years. The draft will be presented at a "Town Meeting" where your comments will be most appreciated but feel free to offer suggestions to any member before then.
