Some common questions about Confirmation

  1. I've been asked to be a godparent, but because I have not received my Confirmation I cannot be a godparent. Is this true?
  2. I've been asked to a sponsor for Confirmation, but because I have not received my own Confirmation, I cannot be a sponsor for someone else. Is this true?
  3. I'm over 20 years of age, am I too old to make my own Confirmation?
  4. I look silly being an adult with kids making their Confirmation. Will I fit in or stand out like a sore thumb"?
  5. What can I do about this?
  6. Am I able to worship & receive Holy Communion even though I have not received my own Confirmation?

The answers to the above are:

  1. True
  2. True
  3. No!
  4. Since we've based the reception of Sacraments upon the READINESS (as the Rochester Diocese stipulates) of the individual, the family, & the community, NO ONE AGE OR GRADE LEVELS ARE THE BASIS FOR THE RECEPTION OF CONFIRMATION. - SO ANYONE FROM GRADE 5 TO AGE 99 CAN BE A PART OF THE READINESS PROCESS FOR THE RECEPTION OF CONFIRMATION. Everyone should fit in, and no one should stand out, like a sore thumb" etc. -that is because adults are totally involved with the entire process.
  5. Plan on coming to the READINESS MEETING FOR CONFIRMATION (as well as for First Eucharist) ON JUNE 4, 2000 AFTER THE 10:00 A.M. MASS IN THE LINK AREA OF ST. MARY'S CHURCH. At this time we will discuss what READINESS means, plus outline the process for the reception of both of these Sacraments of Initiation.
  6. Yes, you are by your Baptism a member of the Catholic Community, & hopefully you are attending the weekly celebration of Eucharist. If you have not received your Confirmation, do not think you are not welcome at the Table of the Lord. Come first to talk to Fr. Dave or Sr. Cate about your desire to complete your own Sacraments of Initiation. We are not here to put stumbling blocks in your way, but to help you grow deeper in your faith life. We encourage you to come & complete your Sacraments of lnitiation. We will be having Confirmation sometime in November of 2000. The actual date is determined by the Bishop's Office. We need to have some meetings to prepare you for the reception of this sacrament.

++We've had adults involved in our Confirmation process for many years. Some of the ages are:

22, 31, 51, 48, 73, even late 80's.+++

Now, with the READINESS PROCESS, an adult sponsor is at the sessions, as in Option 1 or can be your personal guide as in Option 2. Contact us now with any of your concerns and questions - we'll be glad to assist you. Let this be the beginning of not only a new Millennium, but the time for you to complete your Initiation journey. (Note: For those younger, the Readiness Meeting in June is for you & your parents also. More information will be coming forth as the year progresses.)
