The PRISM
SUMMER 2004

As we move forward this summer with vacations and travel we should remember to offer our prayers for each other, our family members and our friends that need them. Each time we offer prayer and sacrifice to Our Lord it comes back to us in many ways. Do we always recognize it in our human terms? We need to persevere against evil in the world wherever and whenever we encounter it. Cursillistas have been given the tools to lead against evil.

By gathering in friendship groups and attending Ultreyas we can share our experiences with our fellow Cursillistas. Each time I group and attend an Ultreya I come away with a renewed hope and confidence to work against the forces of evil around me. We will continue to persevere because of the Holy Spirit being with us if we fulfill our commitments as Catholics every day. Attend weekly Mass, receive the sacraments, repent for our sins and spread the Lord’s word whenever and wherever we can. What else is there?

Each of us has been given many talents by the Lord. He asks us to use them in many ways so we can to reach out and make a difference in our environments. We have vocations to the religious life, married life and single life. We have talents in study, public speaking, music, computers whatever it maybe. We need to recognize and use these talents against evil and for the glory and honor of Our Lord. He asks us to be leaders in our own ways. Be a leader at home, at work, at church wherever you have been planted.

Persevere, keep the faith and move forward each day of our lives. We can’t look back and since we don’t know the future we need follow the Lord’s plan for us

Each year brings change to our families and friends around us. Mary Ann Flansburg and Judy Hendrickson are stepping down from Secretariat. We wish them well and thank them for their palanca and service. Also, one of our most dedicated Cursillistas has decided to retire from his key position on weekends, that of handling hot coffee and beverages for meals, breaks and fourth day talks. We wish Gordy Youngman the best and many thanks for his palanca. Gordy is looking to train a cursillista for this position if someone will step forward during Women’s # 73 in July.

We welcome Chuck Flansburg (Assistant Lay Director), Carole Eilers Lloyd and Jean Salone (Post Cursillo).

Dear Friends in Christ:

My Cursillo Weekend as part of Men's #78 came at a wonderful time in my life. Four years ago the Holy Spirit called me to service as President of Bishop Kearney High School. This time has been the most rewarding and the most challenging work I have ever done. Before my weekend, my faith was strong but, I was growing weary in the well doing. The energy of Men's #78 and the new brothers in faith I have found has allowed me to truly re-focus on my personal relationship with Jesus Christ in the midst of chaos and change. And now a second gift has come from my weekend, a chance to serve others by offering the use of the facilities at Bishop Kearney. What a wonderful blessing. The Lord does work in mysterious ways. I could never have imagined wear I would be led just four years ago and I can hardly wait to see where the next four years takes me. To all my Cursillo friends present and future ... !

100 Club

How much does Cursillo mean to you? To propel the movement into year 2000 and beyond it is going to take some money. Secretariat has been talking about finances, or rather the lack of then, for a long time. Secretariat has come up with a plan to finance Cursillo today and into the future. The plan is called the "100 Club". The club works like this: The goal is $10,000 annually.

One hundred Cursillistas pledging and donating $100.00 every year.

100 X $100 = $10,000

Who are these Cursillistas? You, me, your small sharing group, your Ultreya.

Who is the 100 club? They are anonymous! And it will remain that way.

To pledge to the 100 Club, please complete this online form, print it and send it to John Tate, 36 Greenhurst St., Geneva, NY 14456

If you are unable to join the 100 Club at this time, there are also several openings in the 50 Club, 20 Club and even the 5 Club.  Whatever you can find in your hearts to send would be greatly appreciated.

Attention All Musicians!

Come join the Closing Mass Ministry. We practice at 2:30 PM on the day of the Closing - usually where mass will take place or otherwise noted on signs. If you’d like to practice or need music ahead of time, call Judy Hendrickson at 585-385-4183.

If your plans are up in the air and you find you’ll be there, arrive by 3:00 PM and join us in making music to the Lord!

Team Selection

Occasionally we are asked questions about team selection, and at the Secretariat meeting this past June 8th in Geneva, potential Coordinators for the next men & women’s weekends were discussed.  The eligibility to serve as a coordinator is based not solely on the number of prior teams one serves on, but on a person’s familiarity and understanding of not only the three day weekend process, but on the whole Cursillo Movement itself.  We have a database that keeps track of who served on which weekend and gave which particular talk.  Also involvement in Cursillo workshops, Ultreya attendance, Spiritual Direction, Grouping and Regional meeting attendance are other variables that are considered when that important role of coordinator is selected.  If there are equally eligible candidates, names are tossed into a hat and a coordinator is chosen with hopefully the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

The important role of backup coordinator is in most cases the only other person on the weekend with even more experience than the coordinator (having served in that capacity before).  The spiritual directors of our local movement, with input from the future coordinators, lay director(s) and assistant lay director(s), will meet to assemble a list of potential team members (including team spiritual directors).  We try to achieve a balance of veteran as well as rookie team members. We also try to select members from most Ultreya centers. The teaming process will hopefully allow team members to grow personally in the Cursillo mentality, in turn allowing them to share the gift with others.

If you have felt called to become more involved in the Movement, and would like to volunteer helping out on a weekend either as a team member or as a behind the scenes person, please email us at fagandvm@rochester.rr.com.

There are a limited number of openings for team members, but the behind the scene folks are always welcome, including those that will carry us through prayer and palanca.

Sponsoring a Candidate?

Please send in your applications to your Area Pre-Cursillo Coordinator as soon as the candidate has agreed to attend a weekend. Do not wait until a weekend is announced or, even worse, until just before a weekend.

Sometimes, the scheduling of a weekend waits until there are enough applications.

Region III Service Team

The Region III Service Team of National Cursillo will have a new representative from our area. She likes butterflies, music and lots of humor. She is Judy Hendrickson.

Many THANKS to Ted Capogrossi for his 3 years of service to the Movement!

From Bob Hinds:

I’d like to say Thank You for serving as your editor.

School of Leaders

The School of Leaders will be changing over to Bob Hinds; it should be a challenge and a wonderful way to serve the movement.
