Redemptorist life as a challenge

'I have experienced Redemptorist life as a challenge,

but overall I have enjoyed it and

through it I have become close to God and to God's people.'

Fr Frank Smith C.Ss.R.

I am FRANK SMITH, 53, a Redemptorist priest, originally from Geelong. At the age of 13 I entered the Redemptorist Juvenate at Galong, NSW. Geelong. I was ordained in 1969.

After ordination I specialised in Speech and Drama and Human Relations. I then lectured in Communication at Yarra Theological Union, Box Hill. In 1972, while still a young lecturer, I became involved with the Redemptorist Lay Community. This community emphasised lay involvement and Christian community building. In 1987 I went to Perth to help establish the Redemptorist Lay Community there.

In 1990 I became a member of a mixed community of men and women, of religious and laity in Mirrabooka, a suburb of Perth. I lived and ministered in this community for over five years. I am now happy to be part of the Olympic Village Exodus Community in the Parish of St Pius X, West Heidelberg, Melbourne.

The people of the Olympic Village are not well off. I and three female community members live and minister among the people here. My original inspiration to become a Redemptorist came from being part of Redemptorist missions in my home parish. I was impressed with the preaching missioners as well as their friendliness and humour.

I have experienced Redemptorist life as a challenge, but overall I have enjoyed it and through it I have become close to God and to God's people.
