A woman had a dream. God appeared to her and said, “I’m going to grant you another 40 years, 8 months, and 22 days of life.” Well, she woke up very excited. She thought, If that’s going to happen, I’m going get a little bit of work done.
So if you could nip it or tuck it, push it or pull it, she had it done. And when the doctors were finished, she really looked good. To celebrate, she decided to treat herself to a night on the town. But just as she was crossing the busy downtown boulevard, a car ran a red light. Bam! The car hit her and… well, suddenly she found herself in heaven, standing before God.
“I don’t understand it, God. You said you’d grant me another 40 years, 8 months and 22 days of life, and here I am standing before you. What happened?”
God looked at the woman and said, “I’m sorry, but I didn’t recognize you.”
Our never satisfied search for beauty, wealth and celebrity often obscures who we really are, what we really seek out of this life, what we really value and honor. We become obsessed with the successful career, the beautiful house, the yield of our stock portfolios, and the bigger and best toys that we are crushed when those things fail us – and ultimately they will.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus makes clear that our lives are not about amassing fortunes or achieving great renown. As wonderful as those things may be, God has given us this precious, wonderful life in order to embrace and be embraced by His selfless and affirming love, to discover how to love one another as God loves us: totally and completely, without condition or limit.
That’s why we have invited Sr. Micki Flynn to speak today for the Diocesan Mission Appeal. Sr. Micki will be speaking on behalf of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.
Let us now welcome Sr. Micki. Amen. Amen. Msgr. Tom, Pastor Christ the King
