The
Ushers Ministry has historical significance in that it can be traced back
to the time of Jesus, according to Rick Parchen. Rick
says that back then, men served as guards at temple doors to ensure that
religious ceremonies were conducted without interruption.
Rick
indicated that modern Usher Ministry works to ensure that our masses
proceed smoothly by seating people, taking up collections at the proper
time, directing people during communion, seeing to the comfort of all
present, and by giving out our weekly bulletins as everyone leaves the
church. Rick says ushers are among the first to greet people as they enter
the church and among the last to say goodbye as people leave.
Presently,
there are about 25 volunteers in our Ushers Ministry, with four ushers
serving at each weekend mass. There is a need for more volunteers
willing to serve on the regular schedule or as a substitute. Women
are welcome to join this ministry, as are young people 16 years of age and
older. On-the-job training is provided by those already serving in
this ministry. No meetings are required.
Rick
says that serving in the Ushers Ministry is gratifying as it gives
participants the feeling and knowledge that they are giving back something
personal to God, through service, for the things they received.
