A
group of 14 members, the Ministry of Cantors aid those assembled at Mass
in the sung prayer. This ministry has been part of our liturgy for
nearly 20 years. Its work is under the guidance of St. Patrick Music
Director Shirley Madonna.
Describing
the requirements necessary for being part of the Ministry of Cantors,
Shirley explained the most important things are a pleasant singing voice,
prayerfulness, and the desire to lead the assembly in the communal
celebration of praise. Most people do not realize that it is not
necessary to be part of any other musical ministry of our Church in order
to be a cantor, and that one does not need to have the voice of a soloist.
There
is a training period for all cantors. In addition, cantors and
organists meet late in August, prior to the beginning of the music year,
to prepare for the entire year. They also meet again as
needed. This gives cantors sufficient time to learn the music and to
carefully make ready the music they will be leading at liturgy.
Cantors
receive their detailed schedule two to three months in advance,
accommodating personal requests for assignments and, once again, assuring
the cantor of sufficient preparation time. As with all music
ministries, the presentations relate to the reading of the Mass.
Our
Ministry of Cantors has been enhanced in recent times by several youth
from our parish who are now part of this ministry. Anyone who would
like to join in the ministry, thus sharing their stewardship time and
talent, or those who seek more information, should call Shirley Madonna
weekdays at (610) 444-4364.
