Ministers
of the Word, or lectors, are the 17 men and women of this parish who
assist in the celebration of the Mass and other church liturgies by
proclaiming the Word of God and leading the Prayers of the Faithful.
After
the initial training, including studying an instructional tape, Ministers
of the Word meet informally only a couple of times a year. Contact
person Mike Piergalline meets with new lectors in church to review
procedures. In addition to the training, ministers have a handbook
that explains their work. The book is a reference that gives
explanations and details of readings and pronunciations, thus enabling
lectors to be comfortable in performing their ministry.
Ministers
of the Word work on a schedule. They prepare for liturgical
responsibilities by becoming familiar with the specific readings.
Instructions for lectors encourage them to practice reading the text
aloud, so proper emphasis is given, and the reading is done slowly and
clearly. This means ministry volunteers spend time at home in order
to serve well.
The
responsibility of our lectors is to offer God's words in such a way that
the congregation comprehends and appreciates the various readings and
prayers. Often lectors work with cantors; they also read the
announcements at Mass.
Mike
says that this type ministry has been an essential part of our Christian
worship since the days of the apostles because the Word is from Christ
Himself. He has been serving this ministry since 1985. If you
would like more information or would like to volunteer for this ministry,
please contact Mike at (610) 444-0640.
