Throughout
the Christian ages, during times of critical attention and public need,
the Church has celebrated the Eucharist so that this Supreme Prayer of
Jesus Christ to His Father will carry our anxieties before the Divine
Throne and serve to alleviate our fears. Our basic belief in the
celebration of the Mass includes our firm conviction that Christ gave us
this sacrament to ensure us a share in everlasting life and to forgive
sin. In all the historic events of the last two thousand years,
Christians have united their prayer to the Savior's so that our frail and
frightened selves might be given peace and tranquility -- a peace and
tranquility, as Jesus said, that the world does not give us.
