This
activity is recognized as a ministry because the Cub Scout Pack is
sponsored by our church and because of the excellent instruction and life
experiences youths receive in this program.
Scouting
has been a part of parish activities for many years. This ministry gives
opportunities to adults as well as boys. A committee of eight to 10
adult leaders keep the program interesting while teaching principles of
the organization. Twenty boys make up the Pack this year.
Leader Mike King explained that all boys are welcome, including both
members and non-members of our parish.
Our
Cub Pack meets on the third Thursday of each month. All Dens are
part of the Pack. Dens meet the other Thursdays of the month.
First grade boys are part of the Tiger Den, while second graders are in
the Wolf Den. Third graders are in Webelo I and fourth graders in
Webelo II Dens. Cubs have to accomplish numerous requirements to be
awarded achievement badges before crossing over to Boy Scouts.
The
Cub Scout Ministry gives young boys the opportunity to learn principles of
scouting that follow and reinforce life principles as taught in our
faith. In addition, scouting gives boys the chance to meet for
social activities, to learn new things, and to do community service.
This year, our Cubs helped with trash clean-ups at Nixon Park, they
learned about Canine Partners for Life, they regularly work to ensure the
neat appearance around church property, and they will be caroling at the
Friends Home come Christmas.
Mike
spoke highly of the boys and the families in the Cub Scout Ministry,
remarking how these young parishioners, their families, and their friends
take time from their busy schedules for scouting, learning
self-improvement, and becoming better citizens through
participation. Mike also acknowledged the great group of leaders
working in the program, while giving up personal free time.
