Altar Servers Ministry

Out Altar Servers Ministry consists of 25 to 30 girls and boys, who serve approximately every third weekend at scheduled Masses, as well as other regular and special liturgies.

While the obvious purpose of this ministry is to assist the celebrant, the spiritual purpose draws young people to a closer, more intimate relationship with Jesus because of their involvement in the liturgy.  It is important that parishioners know that our Altar Servers participate more actively than those in many other parishes.  The importance of their services on the altar ranks immediately after that of our Deacon.

Usually there are no meetings for participants of this ministry, but there is a one-on-one training program.  These hour-long sessions, are scheduled once a week for about six weeks.  Training takes place in the fall and spring, depending on the number of new servers.  Barbara Kitching has been the instructor for four years.  In the past three years, some of the older servers have assisted in the training.  That assistance is helpful to Barbara and meaningful to newcomers.

Barbara speaks of the dedication our Altar Servers.  She speaks of their obvious development of reverence for the Eucharist and the priests who offer Mass.  Barbara also expressed appreciation for the families' support through the encouragement they give their children.  Youth may begin their participation in fifth grade and continue through high school.

Talk with Barbara and you will see her dedication to this ministry is strong and sincere.  She welcomes more adults to assist in training and scheduling, as well as more registered parish youth to join this stewardship of time and talent.  Call Barbara Kitching at (610) 347-0586 for information, to volunteer, or to enroll for the next training session.
