By
church definition, the Parish Religious Education Program (PREP) covers
all educational programs held in the parish -- not just those for children
-- says Director of Religious Education (DRE) Marianne Kane.
This
year, 25 volunteers are serving as instructors -- or Catechists -- and
aids in the PREP-Teacher/Teachers' Aides Ministry, teaching faith in
classes for children not attending Catholic schools. Because of the
responsibility a catechist has, the church requires that he or she be
certified by taking required courses in religion. In addition,
conferences are held throughout the year in our archdiocese and our parish
covers the costs for catechists who choose to attend. Courses and
conferences help the catechist to learn more about their own faith as well
as how to instruct their students. Teachers' aides work with
teachers to help classes run smoothly.
Parents
are the primary religious educators for their children. Teaching
children about their faith is accomplished through everyday living, by
setting good examples and through interaction within families, because
children learn by example as well as formal instruction. The
PREP-Teacher/Teachers' Aides Ministry reinforces parents' teachings as
well as giving children a deeper understanding of their faith.
