This guide is designed to offer a capsulized summary of all user-available manuscript collections presently contained within the Philadelphia Archdiocesan Historical Records Center. A majority of these papers were transferred from the American Catholic Historical Society of Philadelphia to this repository for use by our research community.

Contents

MC-1 Heuser, Rev. Herman Joseph, D.D. (Priest, Author, Educator), 1872-1933.

Correspondence between Heuser and prominent church leaders including Mother Katharine Drexel, Thomas C. Middleton, O.S.A., Cardinal James Gibbons, and Archbishop Patrick Ryan of Philadelphia. Letters from notables in the secular community such as Oliver Wendell Holmes, Princess Catherine Radziwill, Leopold Stokowski, and many others are also found within this collection. Materials dealing with publication of the book My New Curate by author Patrick A. Sheehan. Manuscripts from Heuser's work with the American Ecclesiastical Review and Dolphin Magazine. A scrapbook entitled "Commentarius de Judicio Sacramental' contains various prayers, poems, and newspaper clippings focusing on different spiritually oriented topics.

MC-2 Kite, Elizabeth Sarah. (Author, Educator, Archivist), 1865-1941.

Writings in the form of poems, articles, and communiqués of various kinds mainly centered around Kite’s professional literary endeavors. Counted among her published works found in these files are: The Training School Bulletin and the Catholic Part in the Making of America, 1565-1850. In addition, selected works from Commonweal and the Ecclesiastical Review are similarly incorporated. Materials concerning the American Catholic Historical Society of Philadelphia representative of her duties as the archivist with this organization. Miscellaneous notes, postcards written to family members, numerous photographs, and a personal diary round out the contents of this collection.

MC-3 Martinelli, Most Rev. Sebastian, O.S.A. (Cardinal, Diplomat, Theologian), 1896.

Substantial assortment of newspaper articles featuring Cardinal Martinelli on the occasion of his newly assigned post as Apostolic Delegate to the United States. A myriad of different daily presses nationwide outside of Philadelphia are represented, and include such regional papers as the: New York Press, New York Times, and Newark News to name a few. These clippings were originally collected and preserved by Father T. O'Reilly, O.S.A. of Philadelphia during the late 19th century to coincide with the visit of Cardinal Martinelli to America.

MC-4 McCrossin, Lawrence E. (Knight of Columbus, Relief Agent), 1917-1922.

Travel orders, receipts, inventory lists, and security passes related to McCrossin's activities in Europe as part of a Knights of Columbus delegation stationed on the continent. Most of the correspondence issued through this organization deals with supply and personnel data. Referrals from noted officials Richard V. Farley of the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry and Major Thomas F. Meehan of the United States Army. Booklets dealing with various aspects of French life and government along with literature on the Republic of Ireland. MC-5 McGarvey, Rev. William. (Priest, Author, College Chaplain), 1890-1907.

Set of personal sermon pages covering a wide-range of theological matters. Among the most prominent topics discussed in length include youth, holy communion, mortality, and the Accession of Christ. A collection of newspaper clippings featuring Catholic missionary efforts across the globe. Handwritten journal detailing McGarvey's thoughts and observations on Lazarus, Marian devotion, Lenten symbolism, the "Temple of God," and the value of church doctrine in general.

MC-6 Marian Year Celebration, The. (Religious Commemoration), 1954.

Devotional tracts, publications, photographs, and assorted newspaper accounts printed in honor of the Papal Encyclical "Fulgens Corona" that commemorated the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Various correspondence related to the event written by Philadelphia Archbishop John F. O'Hara. A majority of parishes across the Archdiocese published special booklets and invitation cards for different special occasions associated with this particular theme. Series of bound photo and scrapbook albums featuring the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy provides a yearly review of the devotional exercises undertaken by this order in honor of Mary. Informational brochures from the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Catholic War Veterans Committee, and Chestnut Hill College are also included within these files.

MC-7 Middleton, Rev. Thomas Cooke, O.S.A. (Priest, Educator, Author), 1859-1917.

Documentation relevant to different research and business activities highlighting the American Catholic Historical Society of Philadelphia. Many of these letters were exchanged between Middleton and the Augustinian Academy of Good Counsel or Archdiocese of Baltimore Archives. Numerous subjects such as those dealing with the History of the Catholic Church in Indiana, St. Joseph's Church of Philadelphia and others are featured either in newspaper clippings, notebooks, or locally printed periodicals. Full-length original manuscript of S.M. Sener's text The Catholic Church in Lancaster.

MC-8 Griffin, Martin Ignatius Joseph. (Author, Historian, Editor, Activist), 1804-1911.

Several pieces of correspondence sent from family members and professional associates of Griffin. Vast assortment of other materials related to Philadelphia-based institutions including the American Catholic Historical Society and Total Abstinence Benevolent Society. A series of detailed subject files on different aspects of American life in general, and the Archdiocese in particular are available. The Order of St. Augustine, Daughters of the American Revolution, Catholic Press, Women's Suffrage Movement, and the "Know-Nothing" Political Party are among the titles featured within this part of the collection. Notes from such individuals as: Thomas Paine, Casimir Pulanski, Roger Brooke Taney, John Gilmary Shea, and others have also been amassed according to Griffin's reference and research designs.

MC-9 Price, Rev. Thomas Frederick. (Author, Missionary, Priest, Editor), 1860-1919.

Handwritten letters amassed by Price from a multitude of several different sources both personal and professional in scope. Plethora of subscription orders for the periodical on Catholic Apologetics entitled Truth. Many priests affiliated with the Archdiocese of Philadelphia along with other interested parties across the nation most notably the Catholic Club of New York, St. Charles College of Maryland, and the Daily Picayune of New Orleans sent their own respective inquiry cards. Sympathy notes and offers of financial aid for reconstruction of the Nazareth Orphanage located in Raleigh, N.C.

MC-10 Willcox, Mary Brackett. (Wife, Mother, Layperson), 1834-1896.

Correspondence traded between different members of the immediate Willcox family especially Mary and her son Joseph. The subject matter found in many of these and other writings deal primarily with rituals and ceremonies taught by the Catholic church. Communiqués with Fr. Mariano Maller and various students at St. Charles Seminary, William C. Kuffer of St. Vincent's College, and a Bishop Chanbonelle are also enclosed. Also included is a journal article featuring the Willcox family genealogy originally printed in the October, 1896 Records of the American Catholic Historical Society. The collection also features a separate report by an unknown author entitled "An Act of Recourse & Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus."

MC-11 Reuss, Francis Xaiver. (Author, Historian), 1817-1913.

Multitude of individual subject files on various aspects of American Catholicism. These records are broken down according to geographic and diocesan boundaries including the local sees of Philadelphia, Harrisburg, and Scranton. Correspondence of differing types between Reuss and many prominent literary or religious figures from the 19 and 20th centuries. Assorted papers received from President James Buchanan. Various messages exchanged with different nuns belonging to the Order of St. Benedict. Paperwork, notes, and other information concerning research endeavors conducted on behalf of the American Catholic Historical Society.

MC-12 Molly Maguires, The. (Labor Organization), 1874-1885.

Materials dealing specifically with labor unrest among coal miners in Eastern Pennsylvania during the 19th century. Legal papers and printed records featuring arrest and judicial proceedings involving the Molly Maguires. Other types of correspondence feature details on work conditions, employee spirituality, and wage rates. A series of appeal petitions involving group officials and Archbishop James Wood of Philadelphia. Transcription of an address delivered by Franklin B. Gowen, and a report on the case between John Kehoe and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania are also included.

MC-13 Lynch, Major David. (Soldier, Merchant, Tobacconist), 1830-1858.

Diverse array of correspondence between Lynch and various nationally renowned military and political figures. Among the most prolific of these individuals are: Stephen A. Douglas, United States Adjutant General A.S. Russell, and James Buchanan. The subject matter found within most of these letters cover a wide-range of socially oriented issues including Native-American affairs and Slavery debates for example. Set of small portraits featuring different church officials or famous American patriots such as: George Washington, John Adams, Bishop Struzziere, Archbishop Pluyum and others. Land deeds, stock certificates, pamphlets and other financial records on the tobacco trade in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania round out the contents of this collection.

MC-14 Fenian Brotherhood, The. (Political Society), 1862-1870.

Series of inter-organizational communications based on Irish-American activities against the English crown. The main contact found inside these particular missives was Fenian operative Frank B. Gallagher. News on arms shipments, military strategy, and fund raising efforts are featured within a majority of these letters. Treasury reports and financial information offer additional insight into the diverse activities undertaken by this club. A membership register, railway transport passes, and storage placement notes are also counted as part of these records.

MC-15 Hawks, Rev. Edward F. (Priest, Author, Educator), 1900-1952.

Letters exchanged between Hawks and his family in England, or to friends and associates from the United States. The content found within this business-related correspondence centers on a diversity of interests such as the Spanish Nationalist Party, Canadian Armed Forces, St. Joan of Arc Parish, and the Catholic Standard & Times editorial board. Distinguished members of the American Catholic hierarchy are represented in many of these letters as well, and they include: Bishop N. McNeil of Toronto, Canada and Bishop William Webb of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In addition, a compilation of published sermons by Cardinal Francis Spellman of New York are also enclosed.

MC-16 Frenaye, Mark Anthony. (Merchant, Benefactor, Treasurer), 1807-1868.

This set of general correspondence, thank you notes, and financial sheets addressed to Frenaye came primarily from various personal associates. A large number of these letters were sent by notable figures representing the American Catholic establishment such as: Bishop Henry Conwell of Philadelphia, Bishop John McCloskey of New York, Bishop Thaddeus Amat of Monterey, CA, and Jesuit priest John J. Sourin, S.J. of Georgetown University. Included is a ledger book of business transactions undertaken by the Rodrigue family. Many newspaper clippings related to church history featuring such titles as: "The First Catholics of Philadelphia" and "Local History of Hanover." The last will and testament of Demetrius Augustine Gallitizin of St. Michael's Church is also on file.

MC-17 White, William C. (Soldier), 1861-1869.

Numerous letters authored by White who represented the Union Army during the Civil War as a member of Company I, 69th regiment of the Pennsylvania Volunteer force. This series of handwritten correspondence was exchanged almost exclusively between immediate family members. A myriad of scenes are described from the Eastern front in Virginia including: camp life, parade drills, medical service, and battle conditions experienced during armed engagements with the enemy. Duplicate set of transcribed notes accompany the main body of this collection.

MC-18 Flick, Dr. Lawrence Francis, M.D. (Doctor, Historian, Author), 1889-1930.

Several different letters, handbills, pamphlets, and other promotional items accumulated by Flick through his involvement with the American Catholic Historical Society. Membership requests and subscription inquires for the organization's scholarly journal Records. Response cards from various national organizations including the Conception Abbey of Missouri, R.G. Thwaites representing the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, St. Peter's Mission of Dallas Texas, and the Citizens Permanent Relief Committee of Philadelphia. Annual reports issued by the Sisters of Charity from Santa Maria Institute along with a series of materials regarding the St. Vincent's College Alumni Association.

MC-19 Shahan, Most Rev. Thomas J. (Bishop, Historian, Educator), 1899-1932.

Series of correspondence written in relation to different theological studies and academic activities. The Catholic University of America is mentioned prominently in conjunction with various aspects of campus life and administrative duties including building renovations, financial transactions, and book lists. Famous contacts represented within this collection are: Herbert Hoover, Woodrow Wilson, John Raskob, and Cardinal John Gibbons. A number of handwritten notes and books penned by Shahan such as: The Christian Brothers, Living the Popes, and Ireland & St. Patrick are enclosed. Also filed are miscellaneous newspaper clippings, brochures, and folders on the activities of Jesuit missionaries, Maryknolls, and the Knights of Columbus.

MC-20 Synod of Bishops, The [1974]. (Religious Conference), 1972-1974.

A variety of printed objects related to this worldwide spiritual congress are found in the form of newspapers, booklets, letters, or reports. Included among these papers are ones showcasing the theme of Evangelization as presented by Cardinal John Krol of Philadelphia and others in attendance. Most of these articles written on such popular topics as human rights and missionary work are found in their original Latin text. Greeting cards and itinerary books outline the focus of different spiritual workshops conducted. Retrospectives on synod proceedings as reported by the Vatican newspaper L'Observatore Romano.

MC-21 Bruehl, Msgr. Charles P. (Priest, Educator, Author), 1903-1963.

Personal notes written on pastoral life for a book entitled Labour of Love. Correspondence related to this topic sent by important research colleagues including Rev. Victor Viberti, S.S.P. and Cardinal Aloisius Muench of Rome. Class notes taken from Theology seminars and home study courses sponsored by St. Charles Seminary. Newspaper clippings focusing on various education and philosophy issues. A series of booklets featuring analysis on religious themes including: Social Problems of Today & Catholic Teaching, Seminary Authority, and Perennial Message of Easter. Also integrated within these records is a Bellarmine Society program dedicated to Bruehl that was issued after his death.

MC-22 Wirth, Rev. Augustine, O.S.B. (Priest, Author), 1867-1898.

Miscellaneous correspondence dealing with the publication and sale of a six volume work entitled The Pulpit Orator. Most of these letters contain inquiries about obtaining these texts for personal use. Those individuals asking for the books were mainly members of the clergy who wished to learn these passages for possible inclusion within their own sermons. Among the more notable of local requesters were: Archbishop John Ryan of Philadelphia, Rev. Thomas Middleton, O.S.A., Rev. J.F. Clancy of St. Patrick's Parish, and Thomas D. Egan of the New York Catholic Agency plus others from different dioceses across the United States.

MC-23 Catholic Club of Philadelphia, The. (Religious Organization), 1871-1923.

Paperwork related to organizational activities in the form of invitation cards, news releases, and periodical reports. By-laws and election listings among the membership and its governing body enclosed. Committee on entertainment programs and special events files. Among the prominent attendees in receipt of invitations at different times include: Philadelphia Archbishops Patrick Ryan and James Wood, Major General John Newton, and Cardinal Stolli, Pro Delegate to Pope Leo XIII. Various materials sent by the Catholic Club of New York. Board of Trustees news briefs and notes also appear within this collection.

Detailed set of correspondence from a wide-range of sources highlighting Catholic spiritual or historical activity. Included among the most prominent topics are: Christianity in Italy, Bishop Relief Campaign, and the University of Notre Dame. Letters dealing with the writings of Bishop Michael Egan of Philadelphia from the early 19th century. Reports on the state of teaching within the church such as: The Necessity of Explicit Faith in Christ and the Impediment of Abduction - A Dissertation. American Catholic Historical Society Minutes, Board of Manager materials, and Beneficial Savings fund books. Other booklets on Cardinal Dennis Dougherty of Philadelphia and Pope Pius XII also included.

MC-25 Corrigan, Most Rev. Joseph M. (Bishop, Educator, Administrator), 1896-1942.

Lecture notes and correspondence on a multitude of church-related issues dealing with the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and Catholic University of America. Sermons on various spiritual topics including: "Crusade for God in Government, Patriotism, Human Rights and Duties" and the "Suffering of Our Dear Lord" originally delivered either on radio, or from the pulpit. Various printed objects concerning the U.S. Constitution’s 150th Anniversary, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Knights of Columbus, and the Catholic Hospital Association. An assortment of awards, diplomas, honor society honors, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, and other items related to the personal and professional activities undertaken by Corrigan.

MC-26 Catholic Philopatrian Literary Institute, The. (Religious Organization), 1868-1950.

Promotional circulars and invitation cards dealing with basic organizational functions. Official constitutions, by-laws, and descriptions of activities sponsored by their executive committee. Bill of sale information focusing upon different real estate transactions within the City of Philadelphia. Correspondence dealing with local government executives and civic sources. Numerous copies of the club journal entitled: The Philopatrian. Special issue volumes written on the history of this institution by different authors including: "1870: What I Know of the Institute" among others.

MC-27 Catholic Standard & Times, The. (Religious Publication), 1909-1941.

Business and editorial correspondence serves as the main focus of this collection dealing with the newspaper published by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Files on press-related subjects including: advertising space, stock transactions, ordination reports, media studies, and advertising schedules are among the most prevalent items found. Individual or company inquires came from such sources as the Philadelphia Gas Works, Villanova University, Cardinal Dennis Dougherty of Philadelphia, and Knute Rockne of Notre Dame University. Proof sheets showing feature articles on many important figures in 20th century American Catholic history such as: Msgr. Fulton J. Sheen, Fr. Charles E. Coughlin, and Gov. Alfred E. Smith of New York.

MC-28 Webb, Benedict Joseph. (Editor, Historian, Author), 1846-1912.

Mostly correspondence dealing with Webb's research trends, and the historical development of Catholicism in Kentucky. These letters were originally gathered for journalistic or scholarly purposes, and includes personal observations made by prominent Catholic individuals from across the United States. Included are: Cardinal John Henry Newman of England, Rev. F.X. Reuss, Bishop Benedict Flaget of Kentucky, Cardinal James Gibbons of Baltimore and others. Original manuscript of the book Centenary of Catholicity in Kentucky. Individual files on the Sisters of Loretto, French Jesuits in Kentucky, Genealogy of the Elder Family, and origins of the Bardstown Diocese are also enclosed.

MC-31 L'Assemblee Generale Du Clerge En 1780. (Religious Conference), 1780.

Set of reproduced documents taken from original contracts and letters dealing with various business matters between French civil and religious authorities. Financial data, tribute payment schedules, government-church relations, and property guidelines are among the main points addressed within different sections of these papers. All are written in French without a comprehensive translation guide. An additional series of similarly formatted papers related to the 1730 conference are also found inside this collection.

MC-32 Benoit, Canon Peter L. - "Diary Of A Trip To America." (Missionary, Explorer), 1875.

Handwritten diary produced by the English-born Benoit chronicling a series of missionary exploits and observations from his trip through the Ohio Valley, Southern United States, and the Philadelphia region. Traveling companions mentioned include: Bishop Herbert Vaughan of Salford England, and the Rev. Charles J. Gadd, Secretary from the Society of the Sacred Heart. Among the main topics covered such as fund raising efforts, weather conditions, and the ship's crew are eluded to in detail throughout the course of this volume.

MC-33 Reily, John T. (Author, Historian), 1790-1921.

Selected personal correspondence dealing with religious and history-related issues either addressed to or from Reily. Reference materials such as: newspaper clippings and biographical features on the career of Cardinal James Gibbons of Baltimore. Information on the development of Catholicism in Virginia. Draft pages of the book: Conewago - A Collection of Catholic Local History accompanied by letters and source notes on this work. Large amount of items found regarding Martin I.J. Griffin and the Redemptionist Order. Miscellaneous papers making reference to a book entitled: The Mystery of the Wizard Clip.

MC-34 O'Reilly, Robert M. (Doctor, Soldier, Surgeon General), 1860-1916.

Series of letters originating from different military outposts during the Civil or Indian Wars, and sent to various family members across the country. These notes mainly pertain to personal matters such as health, work activities, and wedding arrangements. O’Reilly also wrote of professional experience in his descriptions of travel abroad, work with the British Red Cross, and medical duties performed as an army surgeon. Commendation certificates and invitations cards presented by Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson respectively. A scrapbook containing numerous calling cards received at the Geneva Convention in 1905. Payroll receipts, newspaper clippings, and booklets on court martial procedures also included.

MC-35 Catholic University of America, The. (Educational Institution), 1949-1955.

Administrative materials related to the governance and internal improvements undertaken by the school. Board of Trustee minutes and reports cover a number of different subjects including managerial decisions, treasury data, and objectives of the committee in general. Separate studies published on issues such as the University Press, Enrollment of Women, Academic Services, Catholic Sisters College, and the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Theology and history department faculty correspondence files. Pictorial booklet about the university featuring scenes of student life and architectural landmarks across campus.

MC-36 Sands, William Franklin. (Diplomat, Financier, Educator), 1875-1945.

Vast collection of personal notebooks, manuscripts, and letters primarily devoted to diplomatic issues abroad. Certain events of historical importance from the early-mid 20th century such as construction of the Panama Canal, Russo-Japanese conflict, and foreign service within Central America. A set of communiqués with distinguished government figures including: Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft. Regular contact between Charleston, South Carolina or England with such agents as: Thomas Penrose, John Wray, Henry Bailey, and Edward Read are mentioned in many of these letters.
