Resources Available at PAHRC:

Summary of Resources. The PAHRC contains marriage and baptismal registers before the year 1900 for parishes within the Archdiocese of Philadelphia (Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia Counties). Records after the year 1900 must be obtained from each individual parish. Registers for other counties formerly within the Archdiocesan boundaries are located in their respective dioceses.

Sacramental records are arranged by parish, so it is first necessary to establish the family's correct parish, either from a street address or section of the city where the family lived. Since the City of Philadelphia did not record vital statistics until the year 1860, in many cases the local church is the only source of information for records of births and marriages.

Other PAHRC resources include a number of city directories, Catholic newspapers, parish histories and manuscripts published mainly between 1840-1910.

Baptismal Records will include the following information: child's name, birthdate and baptismal date, names of parents, sponsors and priest performing the baptism. In some cases, the parents' place of origin may be listed, but this is more common in records for the latter part of the 19th century and early 20th century. A notation of the person's marriage may also be contained in the baptismal register, but again, this is not the norm in early records.

Marriage Records will include the following information: names of the contracting parties, witnesses and the presiding priest, and the date of marriage. In some cases, names of the parents may be listed, the ages of the contracting parties, or the place of origin or baptism, but there is no guarantee. Where they exist, the place names of origins tend to be rather vague, listing for example, just "Hibernia" for a native of Ireland. It is rare to discover a specific parish or town in Ireland. Registers from German national parishes usually do contain the specific place name of origin.

Cost of Research. While many of PAHRC's resources are open to the public, the baptismal and marriage registers are considered confidential. Research of these Sacramental records will be conducted by a staff member. Due to the high volume of requests, a modest fee of $15 for the first hour of research and $10 for each additional hour must be charged.

Published Sources. Sacramental registers from some of the oldest parishes have been published in the Records of the American Catholic Historical Society. These include:

Old St. Joseph: Baptisms, 1758-1810, except 1787-1790; marriages, 1758-1836, except 1787-1799

St. Augustine: Baptisms, 1801-1810; marriages, 1801-1830

Holy Trinity: Baptisms, 1790-1806; marriages, 1791-1806

Refer to the Index to the Records Volumes 1-31 (1886-1920) for correct volume and page numbers. This periodical may be found at the PAHRC, the Free Library of Philadelphia, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania and the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania, as well as many Catholic university libraries. In addition, the pre-1800 records of Old St. Joseph have been published in alphabetical form in: Catholic Trails West, Volume I, by Edmund Adams and Barbara Brady O’Keefe (Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore: 1988)

Catholic Newspapers. PAHRC has an extensive collection of 19th century Philadelphia-area Catholic newspapers. These newspapers include a limited number of obituaries, although not as many as the secular newspapers. The papers also give researchers a feel for the period in which their ancestors lived. There were several forerunners to today's Catholic Standard & Times, the official newspaper of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. The Catholic Herald was published from 1833-1857. It merged with The Catholic Visitor in 1857. The Universe: The Catholic Herald and Visitor was published from 1864-1867. Finally, The Catholic Standard (1866-1895) and The Catholic Times (1892-1895) merged in 1895 to form today's Catholic Standard & Times.

Parish Histories. PAHRC has an extensive collection of parish histories. Often written by parishioners to commemorate a parish jubilee, these works provide a good sense of the world in which our ancestors lived in the 18th and 19th centuries. Please note that parish histories do not include a listing of parishioners.

Philadelphia City Directories. The PAHRC holds various Philadelphia City Directories from 1822 to 1916, with some gaps mostly in the early years. These city directories are useful in establishing a family's residence, and thus their correct parish church. Each directory lists the resident’s name, address and occupation. A complete run of city directories (1785-1930) can be found at the Philadelphia City Archives, the Free Library of Philadelphia and the Historical Society of Pennsylvania.

Manuscript Collections. While the manuscript collections contain a great deal of historical information they do not contain genealogical information. The papers of the bishops and archbishops of Philadelphia are held at the PAHRC, but again do not contain genealogical information.

Resources NOT Available at PAHRC

Death or Burial Records. PAHRC does not hold death or burial records. Records from parish cemeteries are maintained by individual parishes. Records from diocesan cemeteries are maintained by the Archdiocesan Cemeteries Office, 111 South 38th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104, (215) 895-3450. (e-mail: cemetery@adphila.org)

Confirmation Records. Confirmation records generally cannot be found at the PAHRC. Some of the early baptismal registers contain an alphabetical list of those who received the Sacrament of Confirmation that year, but these are scattered throughout the register. Usually, the alphabetical list is the only information.

Records after 1900. All records after this date must be obtained from the individual parish.

Master File or Index. PAHRC does not have a master file or index of all of the baptisms or marriages on an archdiocesan-wide scale. All records are arranged by individual parish.

Further information is available from the Philadelphia Archdiocesan Historical Research Center, 100 East Wynnewood Road, Wynnewood, PA 19096-3001; (610) 667-2125.

A Brief History of Philadelphia’s Early Parish Cemeteries

St. Augustine

St. Augustine Cemetery. Founded in 1801. A small plot located next to the church building. Records of internments were destroyed in 1844.

Old St. Joseph’s

Parish Burial Ground (Located near 4th & Walnut St.). This was a very small lot attached to the Chapel. It probably operated from about 1729 until Old St. Mary’s opened its burial ground in 1759. Burials from Old St. Joseph’s were then made at Old St. Mary’s. (The two churches actually shared a joint sacramental register until the 1790s. St. Joseph’s was used for daily Mass, and St. Mary’s was used for weekend Mass and special occasions.) No cemetery records from this time period survive.

St. Joseph’s Cemetery, or Bishop’s Burial Ground (Located at 7th & Washington). Opened in 1824. The bodies from Old St. Joseph’s small cemetery were transferred here. Since the property was held in Bishop Conwell’s name, there was a long legal battle after Conwell’s death. The cemetery closed in August 1893. In 1905 the property was sold, and the bodies were removed to Holy Cross and buried in Section 13, ranges 11, 12 and 13. No lists are available. The Philadelphia newspapers carried this story in June and July 1905, requesting that relatives of those buried in the Bishop’s Burial Ground claim the remains, or they would be removed to Holy Cross in August.

Old St. Mary’s

Old St. Mary’s. The early history of Old St. Mary’s parish cemeteries is complicated. The parish had three distinct burial grounds. The cemetery adjoining the church property, on S. 4th St. is just one of those plots.

St. Mary Burial Ground (Located on S. 4th Street). Opened about 1759, and remained active until the 1880s. Inscriptions from tombstones published in Vol. III of the Records of the ACHS. A small section of this ground was used by Holy Trinity Church. They kept a separate register.

St. Mary’s Cemetery (Located at 13th & Budd [Now Spruce]). Opened in 1800, and remained active until the 1840s. Records contained in the Burial Register volumes 1823-1843 and 1844-1850. In 1899, this property was sold, and those bodies not claimed by relatives were moved to the "New St. Mary’s" at 11th and Moore in May 1899.

St. Mary’s Cemetery (Located at 11th and Moore Sts. in South Philadelphia). Opened in the 1840s, and remained active until about the 1880s. By 1910, the cemetery was overgrown and neglected. A fire at the cemetery destroyed any records held there. Eventually, the bodies were removed to Holy Cross (date unknown) and reinterred in a mass grave. In the 1950s, St. Maria Goretti High School was built on the site. Some of the inscriptions from tombstones were transcribed into a handwritten, bound copybook. Also, the Burial Registers 1844-1850, 1851-1859 and 1859-1878 contain some burial records for this cemetery.
