Peace and Justice Commission News:

In 2001, the United Nations unanimously passed Resolution #55/282 designating September 21st of each year as an "International Day of Peace," asking the entire world to observe a full day of "global ceasefire and nonviolence" and to work toward strengthening peace and alleviating tensions and conflict among the global community.

Peace does not belong to one religion. It is the responsibility of every person on this planet. That is why Franciscans will join with Buddhists, Hindus, Jews, Muslims and all people of the world in a vigil for peace on September 21st.

The St. Maximillian Kolbe Fraternity will display International Day of Peace banners at St. Clare’s and St. Ann’s in order to bring this day to the attention of their parishioners. What can you do to help bring peace to this world? Take a few minutes to pray for world peace, ask your parish to include a notice in their bulletin about September 21st, share the peace prayer of St. Francis with a friend, the possibilities are endless. But we must start somewhere. Everyday should be an opportunity to bring peace into this world, but on September 21st, we can join with the world as we make the dream a reality for one day.

The Peace and Justice Commission are involved in several different ministries. In partnership with the Youth and Young Adult Commission, they are involved with the PACE Center for Girls. Candace is also a member of Franciscans International, an NGO at the United Nations. In addition, Carlos Calderon (who is also the Regional Minister) is involved in the FAITH Organization, which is a ecumenical group representing churches from Volusia County who work with local officials to protect citizens and better the community.
