My husband, Tom, and I live on North Normandy Boulevard in Deltona. People who are familiar with this area no doubt think it is our version of Daytona Beach’s Speedway. Which is why Tom was so surprised the other day to see cars come to a stop in front of our house while a gopher tortoise crawled onto the road, oblivious to the deadly traffic. Tom quickly ran to its rescue and placed it safely in the easement. For several days, whether Tom was outside cutting the grass or emptying the garbage, it seemed traffic would stop and he would look up to see a kind Samaritan walking across the street, arms outstretched, holding the turtle and carrying it to safety as it attempted another trip across the street. As traffic again came to a halt later that week, we noticed a police car pulled off to the side of the road with lights flashing. And sure enough, the officer was carrying the turtle while everyone waited patiently in their cars. “Well, it finally happened.” Tom said. “He’s got a police escort.”
