The "infamous they" say that God watches out for drunks and Irishmen (or is it fools and Irishmen?). I think that St. Francis watches out for little lost puppies. A case in point…my eldest daughter, Erin, moved up to North Carolina a little over a year ago and is doing quite well. She has a full time job, many friends, and a cat. She had planned for several months to also get a dog, preferably a West Highland White Terrier, since we have one who was her especial pet. After thinking it over, however, she decided that she should probably not get a dog. After all, she works full time and is involved in the theatre, activities that work well with cats but not so well with dogs. Well, St. Francis obviously had a different plan. The day after she definitely decided not to get a dog, she was out driving when she spotted a poor, woebegone, tiny puppy on the side of the road all alone. She pulled over and scooped the little thing up, lest she wander out into the road and get hit by a car, and drove to the humane society to drop the puppy off there. However, as soon as Erin pulled into the parking lot, she began sobbing, wondering what would happen to the puppy should she not find a home. Erin took the puppy home and, of course, the puppy, Gracie, is now happily living there, being royally spoiled and spoiling Erin in return.
