SERRA INTERNATIONAL BACKGROUND:
What SERRA is:
SERRA is named after the Franciscan Missionary, Junipero Serra- Founder of many of the California Missions. It was founded in 1935 in Seattle Washington by a small group of Catholic laymen who saw the need to foster vocations to religious life, both by recruiting vocations and by supporting those religious in their active careers. As of 1995 there are 607 active clubs with over 23,00 members in 31 countries.
Most clubs meet twice a month at either lunch or dinner meetings. Many clubs also have a Mass before each meeting. The short meeting programs are used to plan activities to support vocations and also enrich the spiritual lives of the members through fellowship and by having qualified speaker guests on spiritual matters. Originally a male club, SERRA has been open to women for several years and many of the present members are married couples.
