Parish Transition News: Fr. Geoffrey
Fr. Geoffrey Baraan, the new Pastor of St. Anne's, will be saying all the Masses next weekend, November 5 & 6, and we will have an official welcoming reception after the 12:00 p.m. Mass. WELCOME FATHER GEOFFREY!

Today's Readings
First Reading -- Wisdom is easily discerned by those who love her (Wisdom 6:12-16).
Psalm -- My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God (Psalm 63).
Second Reading -- Since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 [13-14]).
Gospel -- Stay awake! You know neither the day nor the hour (Matthew 25:1-13).

WISDOM
We consider wisdom today. The first reading from the book of Wisdom presents this precious gift as a feminine spirit, a very desirable virtue sought by many and graciously present to all who seek her. In today's Gospel, Jesus tells a parable to illustrate wisdom in a practical, measurable way. The wise will conserve their resources, use them prudently, and mark the passing of time. The foolish, on the other hand, not planning ahead, will be in the dark. Both of these readings tell us how accessible wisdom is to all who simply and honestly seek it.

Paul's words to the Thessalonians are not about wisdom, but describe one result of true wisdom: To the wise person of faith even death holds no terror. Our faith in Jesus' resurrection tells us we will all one day rise to new life in Christ.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
For several weeks, we have considered penance as a sacrament of forgiveness, and yet there are two other sacraments in this category. The first, of course, is the Eucharist itself. The other is the sacrament of the sick, long associated with penance.

The letter of James sets out the deep tradition for caring for the sick: sending for the priests, who will pray and lay their hands on the sick ones, anointing them with oil, and giving them forgiveness. Long before other rites of penance developed, the sacrament of the sick was therefore a profound experience of forgiveness. Jesus often healed the sick, nearly always as a visible sign of forgiveness of sin. The tradition didn't unfold smoothly, however, and within a few centuries the oil of the sick was taken home to be applied by caregivers as a salve, or even to be drunk as a medicine. As early as the second century, bishops were therefore urging that priests should be the ones to visit those separated by illness from the Sunday assembly. Thus the practice of consigning the Eucharist and the oil of the sick to the non-ordained faithful to bring home was relatively short-lived.

Announcements

School of Faith & Formation

First Communion
This school year, we have a total of 160 candidates who are preparing to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation & Eucharist for the first time.

We Belong to God - This week these candidates preparing for Reconciliation are reflecting on Baptism, which marks us as belonging to Jesus Christ, the Son of God. One of the central images the writers of Sacred Scripture used to describe God's love for his people was the image of God as the shepherd of his people. How are we, as a parish, helping children grow in a deep love for God?

Youth Ministry and Confirmation

Youth Ministry
St. Anne Youth Ministry will meet on Monday, November 7th. The topic for our meeting will be: Living with Loss: A Celebration of Life. ALL Youth Ministry students are asked to bring a minimum of 5 "family" pictures to the gathering--pictures of siblings, parents, guardians, grandparents, great grandparents, friends, neighbors, and personal heroes (the people can be living or dead). Participants may bring copies instead of the actual photos. The meeting will start at 6:30 and end at 8:30 p.m.
