Today's Readings

First Reading -- Job spoke, saying: I have been assigned months of misery, and troubled nights have been allotted to me (Job 7:1-4, 6-7).
Psalm -- Praise the Lord, who heals the brokenhearted (Psalm 147).
Second Reading -- I have become all things to all, to save at least some (1 Corinthians 9:16-19, 22-23).
Gospel -- Jesus cured many who were sick with various diseases (Mark 1:29-39).

HEALING MINISTRY
During Jesus' ministry "he cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he drove out many demons." This is the case in today's Gospel. Jesus fulfills the vision of Psalm 147: "He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds."

Jesus knew, however, that he couldn't possibly heal all the illness in the world. No matter how many people he cured or how many hours he ministered, there always would be more suffering people like Job who craved his healing touch. His primary mission was not to rid the world of all suffering. His "purpose" was to preach the coming of the reign of God that heals, yes, but ultimately transcends and transforms earthly suffering. With Paul, Jesus could have said, "Woe to me if I do not preach" that good news.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The pastoral care of the sick will be misunderstood if we start from the vantage point of the sickroom. Begin with the Sunday assembly, from which the sick person has been separated by the crisis of illness, and whose absence is given expression in prayer and service. The goal is to extend the consolation of the Lord's presence at the table to those who are apart from it, and for the assembly to enfold them in prayer.

Secondarily, the goal is to teach people what the Church desires for all those who are sick. Seeing ministers dispatched to the sick from Mass every Sunday might help a caregiver realize that their dear one can also receive Communion. Witnessing the anointing of a woman facing surgery might help another person to overcome hesitation and ask for the sacrament's healing and strength. Society's impulse may be to marginalize the sick, but the tradition of our community is to see them at the center of our life. When Roman persecutors ordered St. Lawrence the Deacon to hand over the jewels of the church, he assembled a motley crew of the sick and the infirm and announced with all humility, "Behold, my lord, the treasures of the church of Christ."

Unleash Your "SOUPER" POWER--Put God's Love Into Action
Fifteen years ago, a Super Bowl Sunday prayer inspired a group of young people to do something more than celebrate a football game. They created the "Souper" Bowl of Caring, a youth-led grassroots movement that is now an international event. Since going nationwide, young people around this country have raised over 28 million dollars for people in need.

JOIN FORCES AND BATTLE HUNGER with thousands of youth by dropping $1, $2, or $5 in our soup bowls outside Church today, February 5. Every dollar dropped in a soup pot helps people in need feel the power of GOD'S LOVE. All the proceeds will be going to the St. Anthony Foundation in San Francisco. Thank you!
