Baptism: By Appointment In order to begin the baptismal process of the child to be baptized the parents (or legal guardians) are required to contact the parish office at 471-7766, Mon.-Fri., 4:00-7:00 pm. Please do not make any arrangements for your child's baptism until you have contacted the parish and have begun your baptismal preparation process. Given the very large number of infant baptisms which take place annually at St. Anne, your cooperation is appreciated. If you are a member of the parish and wish to have your child baptized in another parish, the process still requires the following: at least two months advanced notice to this parish and completion of the baptismal preparation process. The letter of permission required for an out of area baptism will only be sent upon the completion of the baptismal preparation process. Please do not set a date for an out of area baptism until you have begun the baptismal preparation process here. With the approval of the pastor of St. Anne, a family friend or relative who is a Catholic priest is welcome to baptize your child during the communal rite. Weddings: By Appointment (Call Rectory at least 6 months ahead. Do not set any specific date without conferring with the Priest.) School of Faith & Formation (CCD Program)The School of Faith & Formation is designed to
assist families in the faith formation of their children. Classes are held for
children of pre-school age to eighth grade. We recognize the parents, as the
primary educators of their children. The School of Faith & Formation's
purpose is to reinforce the faith and Christian values your children experience
at home.
The preparation for the Sacraments of Reconciliation (Confession) and Eucharist (Communion) is a two-year process with the immediate preparation for and celebration of these sacraments in the second year. The faith formation of your children is a continuous process and should not end once the sacraments are received. Youth Ministry & ConfirmationYouth Ministry at St. Anne includes Pathways Youth
Ministry, Confirmation, DiscipleWays Youth Ministry, and EMMAUS Peer Ministry
programs.
Guidelines for Youth Ministry In all our functions we ask each person to respect one another, be considerate when others are talking, keep strict confidentiality on what is shared, encourage each person to participate, and always keep a welcoming spirit to those who join us. Pathways Youth Ministry PATHWAYS Youth Ministry is open to youth entering the ninth grade, or for those not having a youth ministry experience previously. Our purpose is to build a community of young people examining issues at the forefront of their minds & lives, to encourage growth socially, provide interaction through community service projects, and faithfully deepen the relationship with God. In April of the PATHWAYS program all the students are eligible for and invited to register for the sacrament of Confirmation preparation program, however this is not a requirement of any student. In order to register for Confirmation, you must be registered for and have participated in the PATHWAYS Youth Ministry. During the school year PATHWAYS Youth Ministry group meets on Monday evenings in the parish hall. From 6:00 to 6:30 p.m. youth may arrive and have time to socialize and check out upcoming events. At 6:30 p.m. we begin our meeting and will finish with closing prayer by 8:30 p.m.. There is a phone available if anyone needs to call locally for a ride home. In addition to PATHWAYS, we are connected into Diocesan-sponsored events like leadership retreats and YOUTH DAY in the spring, and we encourage involvement on that level. Confirmation at St. Anne The Confirmation preparation program at St. Anne's is a two-year process, with the first year completed as a participant in the PATHWAYS Youth Ministry program. Students may begin the enrollment process for Confirmation as early as spring of their freshman year. The process begins with the enrollment interviews in May, and a decision is made at that time if you would like to enter the program. Those deciding on enrollment are given a candidate agreement that is returned with baptismal & sponsor information, along with a registration fee. The immediate preparation for the sacrament begins in the fall. The Confirmation sessions meet usually twice a month on Sunday evenings from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. There are 15 scheduled sessions, along with a weekend retreat, service hours, sponsor-candidate sessions, and 3 celebrations of different Rites. The Rite of Confirmation usually takes place in late spring. DiscipleWays Youth Ministry DiscipleWays is an exciting, ten month Youth Ministry program for juniors & seniors already confirmed! This answers the question "What do I do after Confirmation?!" DiscipleWays is an opportunity to experience and interact in skills workshops on ten important themes that deal especially with older high school students. It's a comprehensive program that includes special events to build COMMUNITY throughout the year, JUSTICE & SERVICE projects to serve the larger community, WORSHIP & PRAYER services to increase your spirituality, LITURGIES prepared & led by YOUTH---for youth and the faith community of St. Anne's, and PARENT-YOUTH CONNECTORS to support the faith you share at home. DiscipleWays starts in October, and meets twice a month on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. EMMAUS Peer Ministry For the past ten years, Youth Ministry at St. Anne's has focused on a peer ministry model to promote and foster leadership among youth. We use the example of the road to EMMAUS (Luke 24:13-35) as a model that we journey together, with the Lord, in our everyday lived experiences. It is through these experiences that young people are able to encounter the role of being a minister with their own peer group. EMMAUS is an existing group of young people who have expressed an interest in serving the Church through the Youth Ministry program for one year. Some of their responsibilities include planning and leading workshops, icebreakers and prayer for youth ministry meetings & facilitating small group discussions. The peer ministry group also takes on different projects throughout the year, such as the Halloween Party for children, the children's liturgy at Easter, the CCD kids faire and the children's liturgy of the word program on various Sunday's during the year. The EMMAUS peer ministry group has an annual 5 day training retreat during the summer, and also meets monthly for enrichment and planning. Peer ministry is open to all high school students sophomore and above, and applications are available in the spring. News and Announcements Look for Youth Ministry announcements on the news page of this website . For the Confirmation program news, calendar, downloads, and staff information, go to www.stanneconfirmation.com . The Rite of Christian Initiation of AdultsThe Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
(commonly known as the RCIA) is the normal way in which adults become full,
active, participating members of the Catholic
Church.
A very important part of preparation for this active participation is developing the desire and ability to reach out to others, inviting them to "come and see" (John 1:39) where the Lord is to be found, which is in the community of his disciples. The most important thing to keep in mind about the RCIA is this: it is not merely a new way to prepare adults for Baptism, or for other Christians to become Catholics; Baptism and being received into the Catholic Church is only one of the final steps. The goal of the process is full communion, which means "full, conscious and active participation" in the Eucharist and in the whole life of the Catholic faith community. Preparation for initiation is a preparation for full discipleship, including the mission to tell others about Christ and the Catholic Church. This is a very serious commitment, requiring much time for discernment with the help of others who walk beside the catechumens and candidates for full communion as Christian friends and teachers. Many persons who want to join the Catholic Church have already been baptized in another Christian church. They follow a form of these four steps specially adapted to take account of the fact that they are already baptized. The First Step: Period of Inquiry At first, the adult inquirer may accept a Catholic friend's invitation to join him at the Sunday Eucharist. The inquirer's first attraction toward the Church may be deepened a little bit more by that first experience of prayer with Catholics. He is glad of the chance to stay and chat with the parishioners to whom he is introduced. In time, the inquirer will experience the fellowship of many Catholics, and will meet other adults who are also inquiring about the faith. The inquirers meet on a weekly basis with the RCIA team (the RCIA director, catechists and sponsors) to ask questions and learn about our faith. After a suitable period of time, the inquirer proceeds to the second step: the Rite of Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens and the Period of the Catechumenate. The Second Step: Rite of Acceptance Into The Order of Catechumens and The Period of The Catechumenate Some inquirers eventually decide that they would like to begin more formal study of the teachings and practices of the Catholic community. To be ready for this next step, the inquirer needs only to have a desire to seek initiation into the Church. They become aware of this desire in discussion with the RCIA team, and they are admitted into that higher level of preparation in a special ceremony in the Church, called the Rite of Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens. For those inquirers that are already baptized, they are welcomed during the ceremony as candidates seeking full communion with the Roman Catholic Church. In this ceremony the Church symbolically claims the inquirers for Christ by signing them with the cross. This is the first time that the inquirers declare their faith publicly before the parish community. No one likes to do something like that all on their own. Some moral support is needed and each inquirer is accompanied by a sponsor. Sponsors are people who have shared their faith with the inquirers, believe that they are ready to begin formal instruction, and are able and willing to stand up and say so in church. After this church ceremony, the inquirers are called either catechumens (if they have never been baptized) or candidates (if they have already been baptized, but need confirmation and/or communion). These names mean that they are learning the teachings of the Church and beginning to live as Catholics do. Although they are not yet allowed to receive the sacraments, the catechumens do enjoy other important privileges of Catholics. They have a right to receive all the help they need to grow in faith, by receiving instruction in the teachings of the Church and by assisting with apostolic works in the parish. They also have a right to be married in the Church, and to receive Christian burial. During this time, the catechumens and candidates who have not yet received the Eucharist, gather at Sunday Mass to share with the community in the Liturgy of the Word. Since they cannot yet receive communion with us, they are dismissed along with their catechist, after the homily, to study more deeply the Sunday readings. Just as with the time of inquiry, the time spent as catechumens and candidates can vary greatly from person to person. The Sponsors help in this process by being a Christian friend, especially by trying to grow more deeply in their own faith alongside the catechumens and candidates. The Third Step: Rite of Election and The Period of Enlightenment and Purification The period of the catechumenate ends when the catechumens and candidates discern, with the help of their sponsors and the parish RCIA team, that God is calling them to receive the sacraments of initiation at the next Easter Vigil. Before they can receive the sacraments, the catechumens and candidates must be called by the bishop. They must also join their fellow parishioners in their annual Lenten preparation for Easter. For this reason, the catechumens and candidates are received and recognized by the bishop at a special ceremony called the Rite of Election, which is usually held on the First Sunday of Lent. This ceremony usually takes place in the diocesan cathedral. The Rite of Election marks the end of the period of basic instruction and formation, so the catechumens are now called the elect. The elect share in the same Lenten discipline as the rest of the parishioners, because they all share the same goal -- to prepare themselves to celebrate the resurrection of the Lord at Easter and to receive the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist). On the Sundays of Lent, the elect and candidates are prayed for to help them prepare more fully for the sacraments. These ceremonies are called scrutinies. Scrutinies help to strengthen the elect and candidates in these last few weeks of their preparation. In this very simple, yet powerful way, parishioners show that they care deeply for the elect and candidates as sisters and brothers in the Lord and they look forward to the day when they will be able to share the Eucharist together. The Fourth Step: Initiation and Full Participation Finally, the whole parish assembles for the Easter Vigil. The Church has always recognized that in baptism we die to sin in Christ's death so that we may rise to new life with him. The major celebration of the Lord's resurrection is therefore the most appropriate occasion for the elect and candidates to celebrate their Baptism, Confirmation and first Eucharist. For the newly-initiated or neophytes, the time between Easter and Pentecost is a special opportunity to reflect on the commitment that they have made to the Lord, to his Church and to the local Christian community. The readings that we hear at Mass during the Easter season explain the meaning of the resurrection and of baptism, have special value for the neophytes. The neophytes are encouraged to continue the apostolic activities that they began as catechumens and candidates, to undertake other ministries, or to share their talents and insights with the parish community in other ways. Through these ministries, the neophytes take their place in the Church as full, conscious and active members of our community. If you know someone who might like to begin journeying with us in faith, please invite them to contact our RCIA Director at (510) 471-7766. Committees, Ministries, Groups And Social OrganizationsVolunteers are the heart of St. Anne's Catholic
Parish. There are a number of committees, ministries, groups and social
organizations in which parishioners can actively participate and share their
faith, dedication, and talent. The list of organizations below is open to any
parishioners. Only the officers in the Pastoral Council and Finance Committee
are elected by a popular vote of the
parishioners.
Pastoral Council The Saint Anne Pastoral Council is composed of twelve lay parishioners and ordained clergy (priests and deacons) assigned to the parish. The lay membership consists of nine elective and three appointive positions. Membership eligibility requires one to be 16 years old and above; a registered member of the parish for at least one year prior to the election or appointment to the council. Also show regular financial support or parish participation. Finance Committee The St. Anne Finance Committee was mandated for all parishes by the Revised Code of Canon Law. The role of the committee is to help the pastor in overseeing the financial concerns of the parish. Typical functions of the finance committee include: - Preparing and presenting an annual parish budget. - Reviewing income and expenses semi-annually to determine if operational cost are within the approved budget. - Providing parishioners periodic reports on parish financial position. - Review parish fund raising programs. Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) St. Anne sponsors a CYO program as one dimension of the total ministry to youth. Athletic programs can help young people toward imperishable crowns as well as perishable ones. A parish CYO program justifies its existence, the sacrifice, and expense it entails only if it makes better Christians of its participants. In our CYO program, emphasis rests not on the number of games won or lost, but on the participants' attitude in victory or defeat. Learning how to lose is just as important as learning how to win. Learning how to win graciously is more important than winning itself. Our program is designed to serve the needs of all our youth. It enables the gifted to excel, the less gifted to participate and improve. "Star" athletes and teams do not receive exclusive attention. The principles of fair play and sportsmanship must govern every game. Dishonesty has no place in CYO competition. CYO competitors must not borrow from professional sports questionable techniques for winning at any cost. Finally, St. Paul advises in I Cor. 9:24 -- "run to win". In CYO athletics, all who compete can win, if they run to win the real prize: closer union with Jesus Christ. Charismatics The Catholic Charismatic is a "Grace of Pentecost sweeping through the Church". Men and women of all ages come together as a community to praise God, to pray, to learn, and to seek a renewal of spiritual life. Members of the Charismatic Prayer Meeting of St. Anne respond to the call "to make the divine message of salvation known and accepted by all men" through their involvement in various ministries in the parish. There is no formal membership. Guadalupana The objective of the Asociacion Guadalupana is to spread the devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe and an awareness of our heritage and traditions. The Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego, an Aztec Indian, the 12th of December of 1531. This date was solely 10 years after the conquest of the Tenochtitlan, the Aztec City and 40 years after the Discovery of America by Columbus. Her apparition at this moment in history is very important. When the Virgin Mary called Juan Diego "My Son", she adopted all of us living in the American Continent as her children. As proof of her presence in the new continent, the Virgin Mary left her image in Juan Diego's Huipil or Tunic. Her image is venerated in Mexico City and in our own church. The Knights of Columbus The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic, family, fraternal, service organization. It is committed to the four cardinal principles of charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism. St. Anne Council 8627, K of C was chartered on March 29, 1984 and is one of the active organizations of St. Anne Parish. Our membership belongs to different races and speaks different languages. We are diverse, yet we are one. Our diversity spells creativity, our unity spells strength. Our years of achievement show that we have remained true to our heritage and we will continue to build on it. We invite Catholic gentlemen 18 years old and over to join us. St. Anne Council 8627 meets every 4th Wednesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. Legion of Mary The Legion of Mary is a Catholic lay apostolate dedicated to personal sanctification and evangelization. The active members meet once a week and perform a two-hour apostolate within the week. Work is directed towards conversion, conservation and consolation through home visits, distribution of Catholic literature, teaching catechism, visitation of the sick and elderly and whatever help the priest needs in shepherding his flock. The active members are further subdivided into juniors from eight to seventeen years and seniors from eighteen years upward. For those unable to attend meetings, another kind of membership is available, that of an auxiliary. This is open to priests, religious. or lay persons. The auxiliary group is the praying wing of the Legion. Its service is the daily recitation of the rosary and a short prayer. Marriage Encounter Marriage Encounter (M.E.) is for any couple who wants to enrich their marriage. It is a positive and personal experience for a couple which offers a technique of communication they can use for their married life. A positive, simple, common sense experience between husband and wife that revitalizes marriage by helping couples to see what their relationship could and should be. The weekend is a series of talks which are given by a team of trained couples and a priest. Each talk gives a husband and wife the opportunity to look at themselves as individuals, and to look at their relationship with each other, with God and with others. An M.E. weekend is not a retreat, marriage clinic, or a sensitivity course. It is not a time to look at the past, but rather to your future together. It is a time to share your feelings, your hopes, joys and frustrations. Marriage Encounter is for couples who desire to make their marriage better. A Marriage Encounter weekend is open to all happily married couples regardless of faith, race, education and financial status. Marriage Encounter is also for priests and religious who want to revitalize their relationship with the people of God and develop an ever deeper appreciation for their vocation. There are information nights held for couples who want to know more about M.E. For more information on this valuable program, visit the Worldwide Marriage Encounter Web Site, provided by the San Jose/Oakland Marriage Encounter Presenting Team.Marriage Preparation (The Engaged Couple Program) Marriage Preparation prepares engaged couples for marriage. The engaged couple should contact the Parish Office six months in advance of their wedding date. The initial interview takes place with the priest after which all other requirements are determined. The program will help couples look at themselves in depth in order to discover what they truly want for their lives. The engaged couples are required to take one of the programs held on a weekend or the Evenings for the Engaged program held for six consecutive weeks. Couples For Christ Couples For Christ (CFC) is an international Catholic Christian Ministry that focuses on married couples through a seminar called the Christian Life Program (CLP). The program's emphasis is on husband and wife growing together in their Christian lives. It also focuses on the strengthening and the development of the Domestic Church, which is the family. Other programs that reach out to other members of the family - widows, singles, divorced, youth and children. We welcome everyone. For more information on this valuable program, contact the Saint Anne Parish Office, or visit the Couples For Christ Northern California Chapters Web Site.St. Anne Filipino Group It was early in 1973 when Sister Felicia Sarati, CSJ, approached some people about the idea of forming a parish group for Filipinos. The idea was welcomed by the nucleus group of seven couples. In the spring of 1973, a special Filipino Mass and pot luck was organized to launch the beginnings of the group. The response was overwhelming and the St. Anne Filipino Group was formed. We formulated our goals to have solidarity in purpose. It was this simple statement--"we exist to help the community with one and to extend that communal concern with those in our community of faith". We seek to identify the needs of the Filipinos in our area and respond to them. St. Vincent De Paul Society The St. Vincent de Paul Society is a world-wide charitable, lay organization whose membership is made up of local parishioners. Our goal is to put the Gospel message into action by helping those in need in a personal way. We do this by feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, assisting the homeless, visiting the sick and attempting to share God's love with those who come to us for assistance. If you are of high school age or older and can share your time and talents. We invite you to our meetings on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. in the rectory. Santo Nino Group The Santo Nino Group brings the image of the infant Jesus of Prague (or Santo Nino) to the familys' house. They pray the rosary and the first day of the novena along with the family. The image stays in the house for nine days for the family to pray. On the ninth day, the group picks up the image and brings the image to another family and continues the cycle again. They pray the rosary and the novena with the family. The main purpose of this group is to encourage the family to pray together. There is a saying "the family that prays together, stays together". The other purposes are to teach the young people to pray the rosary, to teach the family that God is always with us and that He answers all prayers especially if you are persistent. This group also helps out on most of the church's activities. It is also one way to meet new friends and praise God every week. Everyone is welcome to join us. There are no restrictions or no requirements. Please come and join us to pray. Senior Group The St. Anne Senior Group works to benefit its members physically, mentally and spiritually. We donate a portion of our funds to the Church in response to the Stewardship program. As part of our Ministry some of our members are Lectors and Eucharistic Ministers. We lead the daily prayers after the 8:00 a.m. daily mass. We also participate in the celebration of the feasts and novenas, as well as the annual Festival of the Church. Registered paid members are eligible to participate in the Mutual Aid Benefits provided by our Group. We celebrate the founding of this group yearly in the month of August. Once a year we arrange a trip to Reno as a fundraising project. Members socialize and are honored on their birthhdays at our monthly meetings. Social Justice Committee The purpose of the Social Justice Committee is to raise the awareness and commitment of the members of the parish to Catholic teachings and responsibilities with regards to social justice by providing information, support, and challenges. St. Anne's Social Justice Committee believes that our parish community are called to be "the salt of the earth" and "the light of the world" in the words of the scriptures (Matthew 5:13-16). As stewards of God, we are called in a special way to respect all life to serve the hungry and homeless, to welcome the stranger and immigrant, to reach out to troubled families, to advocate for just public policies, to organize for safer and better communities, to work creatively for a more peaceful world, to show our respect for the Creator by our care for creation and commitment, and to work for environmental justice. If you would like to join us, please contact our Parish Office. Union City Cursillo Group The Cursillo movement was developed by a group of men in the late 1940's in Majorca, Spain as a form of renewal, in order to bring the Church to life in the hearts of men. It is a Christian formation whose fundamental idea is to make it possible for anyone in the world to live a Christian life in a natural way and to learn the Gospel. Here at St. Anne, the Cursillo Group is composed mostly of lay persons who are active members of different organizations in our parish. Safely Home - Grief Support Ministry Jesus said "Come to me all you who labor and are burdened and I will give you rest". SAFELY HOME GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP meets on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of every month, classroom #101, 6:30 - 8:30 pm. All are invited who are experiencing grief or those who have experienced their own grief and are willing to share their process of their Season of Grief.
