GRAND KNIGHT’S REPORT

Description: C:\Users\BJLiles\Documents\K of C\Newsletter\12html\Bulletin_files\Bulletin_files\image001.jpg

Dear Brothers

The Knight of Columbus Mass is only a month away and planning for this event is currently underway.  On Sunday, June 3 at the 10:30 AM Mass, all Knights are invited to join in the celebration of the Mass at Holy Rosary Church.  Our Fourth Degree Honor Guard will join the procession at the beginning and end of Mass.   Knights will also have roles in the Mass to include bringing up the gifts, doing the readings, and being Eucharistic ministers and Ushers.  Please plan to join your brother Knights at the 10:30 AM Mass with your family and wear your name badge.  If you would like to have a role in any part of the Mass, please contact Bob Liles.

Editor’s note:  Originally a pig roast pot luck was scheduled after Mass, but due to unforeseen circumstances it will have to done some other day.  Instead we are looking at having coffee and pastries in the small courtyard for the parish to enjoy or we might all go out for lunch at a local eatery or there might be nothing.  Be prepared for anything.

I would like to take this time to thank all the brothers who helped make the Poker Tournament last Saturday, April 28 a big success.  All tournament proceeds will benefit The Andrew Ortega Memorial Fund for Children in Need.  The tournament included a Tri-Tip and pasta dinner and we received many compliments on the food that our Brother Knights and their spouses had prepared.  Our thanks go to Ron and Paulette Santa Maria for preparing the pasta and Ron’s secret sauce.  Paulette also worked very hard in the kitchen prepared each plate for the waiters to server.  Additional thanks go to Robert and Lynn Velazquez for cooking the tri-tip which was cooked to perfection with wonderful flavors. Special thanks go to our Deputy Grand Knight Bob McDonald whose passion and efforts was the driving force behind the success of the Poker Tournament and dinner.  Bob did much of the organizing, shopping and meal planning for the dinner that helped make our third event a big success.  Bob Liles helped with the logistics and cleanup at the event between getting his youngest daughter off to her High School dance on the same night!  Thank you to all the brothers who served as waiters, that adds so much to the event and leaves a lasting impression on our guests.  It was great to see Bill Ortega and his youngest son Alex, father and brother of Andrew Ortega, whose memory we celebrate with this event.

God Bless you and your family,

Marek Relich

NEW SIR KNIGHT

Congratulations to Sir Knight  Ama Ibe  and  Sir Knight Joseph Caulboy Supreme Council Representative.  They were part of an Exemplification of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus which was held on Saturday , April 28, 2012 in Sacramento.

NEW BROTHER – Tim Rubin

Tim went through the 1st degree on April 14th in Oakley.  I think most of you know Tim, since he runs the Harvest Faire.  Tim lost no time learning the ropes as a knight because he was at the poker tournament working hard.

"Blues, Brews & BBQs" at THE STREETS

This year our council along with the other councils in the district will work three beer booths and a token booth.  Our council needs to supply three to four people per shift.  This is not restricted to Knights.  Bring your spouse or your friend.  I am planning on splitting all of the councils up, but if you want to work with the person that you sign up with the please let me know and I will keep you together.  The shifts are:

Saturday May 26th - 11 -2, 2-5, 5-8

Sunday May 27th - 11-1, 1-4, 4-6

We need three people for each shift except Sunday 11-1 and Sunday 4-6 when we need four.  So unless someone works two shifts we are going to need 20 volunteers.  First to ask for a shift gets that shift.  Please let me know if you want to work the beer booth or the token booth or you don’t care.  I need our fastest people to work the token booth so that it does not become a bottle neck.  Once we sell a patron a token then we have their money, but if the line gets too big they will leave and eat at one of the restaurants at the Streets.  The token booth also puts the wristbands on people to show that they are over 21.  First shift needs to show up 30 minutes early and last shift needs to stay until it is officially shut down.  Everyone needs to sign in and out or our council will not get credit for the hours worked.  Last year our council earned about $9 for each hour worked.  We are working a special truck that Sierra Nevada has.  It has about one dozen of their beers and for $5 a patron gets 14 oz of one beer or 7oz of two beers.  It will be located right next to where all of the competitors are cooking and selling their food.  I was told that this special truck has three separate tap areas and each one needs a team of four working it.  The Knights have been given more duties than any other non profit group.  Let’s show that we deserve it.  If you work the event please wear your shirt, hat or apron to show that you are proud to be a Knight.

WHOLE PIG ROAST – Postponed

Some conflicts came up and the pig roast is going to have to be delayed.  We still attend Mass together at 10:30 on June 3rd and then maybe some of us will head to a local restaurant to enjoy lunch together or maybe grab some pizza.  Or maybe not.  It will be a surprise.

ANTIOCH COUNCIL SHIRTS

You may have noticed a lot of brothers wearing Antioch Council shirts with their name embroidered on it.  If you want one just pick up a navy blue polo shirt at any store and give it to Bob Liles along with $3.

For the Unexpected

Record numbers of people are living well into their 80s, 90s...and even past the age of 100. That translates into more time to do the things you want to do, to spend time with the people you love. It also poses new challenges.

In aging, you change in some familiar ways — and some ways that might be completely unexpected. In your 60s and 70s, tasks and activities that you once performed routinely or with ease might become increasingly difficult. And, over time, you may need more and more assistance with such activities. You might also experience a sudden, acute need for such help after a debilitating illness — such as stroke.

Everyone is potentially at risk. A 2005 study1 found that 69% of people turning 65 years of age will need some long-term care before they die. Woman are at a higher risk than men with 79% of women turning 65 years of age needing some long-term care and 58% of men turning 65 needing some long-term care. Among those turning 65 years of age, 44% will need less than 1 year; 30% will need 3-5 years; 12% will need 5 or more years. On average, private nursing home care can cost upwards of $78,000 per year.2 You may be able to manage with at-home nursing care. Yet this option, too, can be quite expensive: such services can cost over $55,480 per year in the U.S.3 for eight hours of service, 365 days a year.

These figures can be expected to increase over time. 40% of those receiving Long-Term Care services are adults between the ages of 18 and 64.

My Brothers God Bless You and Your Families,

We had a good crowd and excellent food.  First place went to Tom Brandt, 2nd to Dennis McNelis, 3rd to past champion and brother Knight Joe DelChiaro, 4th to Mike Courtney and 5th Yadira Lopez, wife of Brother Andy Lopez.  To avoid not mentioning one of the many helpers, I won’t list any.  But you know who you are and we greatly appreciate the effort that you put in to make this a success.

The color corps showed up to lead the procession around the block and we had five brothers trading off on holding the canopy above Father Anselm who was holding the Monstrance.  Perfect weather.

SARAH MORALES – STATE CHAMPION

Description: C:\Users\BJLiles\Documents\K of C\Newsletter\12html\Bulletin_files\Bulletin_files\image007.gif

State Deputy Charles Clark and chairman Roman Bejarano with Sarah Morales – 12 year old state champ

Sarah is a Holy Rosary student and the winner of our contest.  She made 20 out of 25 at the state championships.  There are over 300 councils in California so this is a major achievement.  Our last state champion was Makenzie Cast in 2006.  In the years between the two winners our council winners had placed 2nd, 3rd and 4th at the state championships.  That is an amazing record.

STOCKTON PORTS BASEBALL GAME

Join your brothers for a day of fun at the ball park.  We have gone to a Ports game many times and always have a great time.  Date has not yet been set, so stay tuned.  Tickets are cheap and we usually have a tailgate in the parking lot before the game.

WEAR YOUR K OF C BADGE EVERY SUNDAY

We are asking all brothers to wear their badges whenever they go to Mass.  Let the parish know that the Knights are here and that there are a lot of us.  Wear it with pride.  Then talk it up and get one person to join.   If you lost your badge let Bob Liles know and he will get you a new one.

Manhattan Declaration - REASONS TO SIGN IT

If you have not yet gone to www.manhattandeclaration.org and signed the declaration, do so now.  You will be joining good company, like our bishop, and letting the world now that a lot us still believe in the values and principles of Christianity that have been professed for over 2000 years.    About half a million people have already signed it, but in one sense that is pretty sad when you consider that the population of the United States is over 300 million people.  Why would our politicians decide that moral issues are important to this country if not even 1% of the population will sign their name to a document that says these items are important.
