Dear Parishioners,
This is a very active period of time in the Church year.  Last Thursday, we celebrated the Solemnity of the Ascension.  This coming Sunday, we will celebrate Pentecost, which marks the end of the Easter Season.

After the Ascension of Our Lord into Heaven and before Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit, what must life have been like for the apostles?  From today’s reading from the Acts of the Apostles, we learn that after Jesus was taken up to heaven, the apostles returned to Jerusalem.  Entering the city, they went to the upstairs room where they were staying.  Together they devoted themselves to prayer.  Mary, the mother of Jesus, was in their company.

As we think about these very important events, we cannot help but wonder what was going through the minds of these men.  It is not hard to imagine that these followers of Our Lord would be anxious and apprehensive about what was in store for them.  Jesus had spent considerable time preparing them for their mission but they had not yet received the Spirit.  They were unsettled by their Master’s departure from their midst.  What a challenge of faith they must have faced!  And what did they do?  The apostles turned to prayer.  Mary, the Blessed Mother, who was with them, must have been a wonderful source of encouragement and strength as they prayed together.

We too are faced with uncertainty at times and surely sometimes we are apprehensive about the future.  Whenever our faith is challenged and we need help and support, let us follow the example of the apostles and turn to our Lord in prayer.  As we begin the month of May, which is dedicated to Mary, Mother of Jesus and our Blessed Mother, may we be ever mindful of her readiness to intercede for us with her Divine Son.
On those occasions when our faith is being put to the test, let us remember also the following reflection from the writings of Saint Augustine concerning faith. He said, “Faith is to believe what we do not see and the reward of faith is to see what we believe”.  Let us pray that, like the apostles, we may one day achieve the reward of faith and see what we believe.

God bless!

Deacon Bill
