Dear
Parishioners: The
main message of Jesus in this Sunday’s Gospel has to do with sin and the need
for repentance. Jesus cautioned
his listeners then and cautions us now to think clearly about sin and its
consequences. Many in Jesus’ time
and some people even today associate tragedies they or others experience with
punishment from God for their sins and offenses. Jesus, in fact, strongly disputes the judgment his listeners
were making about the guilt of the Galileans and those who died in the collapse
of the tower at Siloam. Twice
Jesus said, “By no means!” are they guiltier of sin. Jesus
urged his listeners then and urges us now to recognize we are all guilty of sin
and we must repent of our sins.
Twice Jesus said, “But I tell you, if you do not repent, you will all
perish as they did!” The
Teacher, Jesus, continues with the telling of the parable of the fig tree. The owner of the field, the vine
grower, is interpreted to be God. Jesus is the gardener. The fig tree is the sinner who has not
been able to bear the fruit of repentance. The parable is about the amazing patience of God and the
love of Jesus for the sinner. What
started out as a message of doom and gloom becomes a story of mercy and
hope. Jesus, in the person of the
gardener, appeals to God, the owner of the field, to allow the tree, the
sinner, more time to respond to his care and feeding. The
need for repentance is not always understood. You may have heard it said that the closest we ever come to
perfection is when we write our resumes.
Since we may not be guilty of any serious wrong doing, we may be tempted
to think that repentance is for other people. The truth is that we are all called to repent and repentance
goes beyond simply saying that we are sorry for our sins. That, by itself, is contrition. Repentance involves a change of heart,
the radical elimination of whatever it is that keeps us from enjoying a closer
union with our Lord. Our
Lord wants us to be truly repentant and to persevere in leading our lives in
keeping with the will of the Father.
May the Lord bless us and lead us to sincere repentance. God
bless! Deacon
