The invocation and devotion to Our Lady of the Divine Providence originated in Italy in the 13th century. It was a very widespread and popular devotion that later occurred in Spain where a sanctuary in Catalonia rose.
After being named bishop of Puerto Rico, the Catalan Gil Esteve y Tomas, brought with him the devotion that he knew in his years as a seminarian. He had to put his diocese in the hands of the Divine Providence because he found the cathedral in ruins and the economy of the diocese in worse conditions. The confidence of the bishop and his work gave fruit quickly. Before five years, he was able to reconstruct the cathedral temple, in which there was devotion to the Virgin of Providence. The original image is a beautiful oil painting in which the Virgin appears with Jesus sleeping peacefully in her arms.
Pope Paul VI declared Our Lady of the Divine Providence the main patroness of the island of Puerto Rico by means of a signed decree on November 19, 1969. It was also decreed in that document that the solemnity of the Virgin had to be transferred from Jan. 2, the anniversary of her arrival to the island, to Nov. 19, the day in which the island of Borinquen was discovered.
The decree united the two great affections of Puerto Ricans: the love for their precious island and the love for the Mother of God.

La adovaciòn y culto a Nuestra Señora de la Divina Providencia se originò en Italia en el siglo XIII. Fue una devociòn muy difundida y popular que posteriormente pasò a España donde se levantò un santuario en Tarrogona, Cataluña.
Al ser nombrado obispo de Puerto Rico, el catalàn Gil Esteve y Tomàs trajo consigo esta devociòn que conociera en sus años de seminarista. En las manos de la Divina Providencia tuvo que poner toda su diòcesis este prelado, pues encontrò la catedral pràcticamente en ruinas y la economìa de la diòcesis en peores condiciones. La confianza del obispo y su trabajo dieron fruto ràpidamente y antes de los cinco años ya habìa podido reconstruir el templo cadralicio, en el que se estableciò el culto y la devociòn a la Virgen de la Providencia. A imagen original es un hermoso òleo en el que aparece la Virgen con el Divino Niño dormido plàcidamente en sus brazos.
El Papa Pablo VI declarò a Nuestra Señora Madre de la Divina Providencia, como patrona principal de la Isla de Puerto Rico mediante un decreto firmado el 19 de noviembre de 1969. En ese documento se decretò tambièn que la solemnidad de la Virgen debìa trasladarse del 2 de enero, aniverario de su llegada a la Isla, al 19 de noviembre, dìa en que fue descubierta la Isla de Borinquen.
Se quiso unir asì los dos grandes afectos de los puertrriqueños: el amor por su preciosa isla y el amor por la Madre de Dios.
