NUESTRA SENORA DE ALTA GRACIA
(Dominican Republic)
The Dominican Republic where the evangelization of the New World began,
is under the protection of the Virgin under two titles. Our Lady of Mercy, and the Virgin of
Altagracia, Protector and Queen of the hearts of the Dominicans.
There are historic documents that prove that in 1502, in the island of Santo Domingo ,
Mary was worshiped under the title of Our Lady of Altagracia. Her portrait had been brought
from Spain by Alfonso and Antonio Trejo, brothers who were among the first European settlers
of the island. The first shrine was in the City of Higuey in 1572 and in 1971 the present
Basilica was consecrated.
The portrait of Our Lady of Altagracia depicts a Nativity scene , which was restored in
Spain in 1978. The scene of Jesus' birth is painted on a fine cloth, the Virgin, occupies
the center of the picture, she is looking with tenderness at the child who lies on the straw
of the manger.
Her feast day is celebrated on January 21st.
La repùblica Dominica, donde comenzò la evangelizacìon del Nuevo Mundo,
vive bajo el amparo de dos advocaciones marianas: Nuestra Señora de la Merced, y la Virgen
de la Altagracia, Protectora y Reina del corazòn de los dominicanos.
Existen documentos històricos que prueban que en el año de 1502, en la Isla de Santo Domingo,
ya se daba culto a la Virgen Santisma bajo la advocaciòn de Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia,
cuyo cuadro pintado al òleo fue traido de España por los hermanos Alfonso y Antonio Trejo,
que eran del grupo de los primeros pobladores europeos de la isla.En el 1572 se terminò el
primer santuario altagraciano y en el 1971 se consagrò la actual basilica.
Sobre una delgada tela aparece pintada la escena del nacimiento de Jesùs; la Virgen
ocupa el centro del cuadro y su mirada llena de dulzura se dirige al niño casi desnudo que
descansa sobre las pajas del pesebre.
La fiesta de la Altagracia es 21 enero.
