IMMACULATE CONCEPTION
Imaculada Concepcion
(Patroness of the United States and Nicaragua)
St. Teresa of Avila had given one of her relatives a silver image
of the Immaculate Conception to take with him to America so that she could be
his protector as he started a new life in a different continent. Don Rogrigo de
Cepeda(also called El Viejo) always took the image with him wherever he went. He
established himself in Chinandega, Nicaragua, and the image aroused the devotion
of the indigenous people.
After several years, Cepeda was assigned to Peru and he attempted to take the
image with him, but the people of the town refused to allow him to do so. He
attempted to go three times but because of storms and the fact that he could
not find animals to transport the load, he could not continue the journey and
had to return to the town. The parish priest interpreted this as a desire of Our
Lady to remain in that town among those people, and so it was decided that the
image should stay. The Shrine of the Immaculate Conception of El Viejo is now very
popular throughout Central America. The feast is celebrated in Nicaragua from
November 28 to December 7.
In the United States, the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in
Washington, D.C. celebrates Mary with all the different avocations and names by
which the population of this country--hailing from all over the world--celebrates
her.

Santa Teresa de Jesùs habìa regalado a uno de sus parientes una
imagen de la Inmaculada para que se la llevara en el viaje a America que iba a
emprender y fuera su protectora en sus primeros momentos en el contienente. Don
Rodrigo Sanchez de Cepeda (llamado El Viejo) siempre la llevò consigo por tierra
y mar. Se estableciò en Chinandega, Nicaragua, y la imagen despertò la devociòn a
la Madre de Dios entre los indìgenas.
Despuès a varios años, Cepeda fue destinado a Perù, y quiso llevarse la imagen,
pero los habitantesde El viejo se opusieron. Salìo hasta tres veces, pero las
tempestades y el no encontrar animales para llevarle la carga no le dejaron
continuar su camino, por los que tuvo que regresar. El pàrroco del lugar interpretò
la situaciòn como el deseo de la Virgen de que la imagen se quedase el aquel lugar y
asì se hizo.
El Santuario de Nuestra Señor de la Concepciòn de Viejo es de gran fama en Amèrica
Central. La fiesta se celebra entre el 28 de Noviembre y el 7 de Diciembre.
En Estados Unidos el Santuario National de la Inmaculada Concepciòn, en Washington,
DC celebra a Nuestra Señora en muchìsimas advocaciones y nombres por las que los
habitantes de este paìs, llegados de todas partes del mundo, la honran.
