Suitcases For Africa

A Message from Suitcases for Africa

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the generous donors and supporters at Corpus Christi for all you have done this year to assist our work for orphans in Kenya.  Our visit to the projects this summer was a moving and inspiring experience and we were overjoyed to see how well they are operating.  We saw huge improvements taking place, but there is still much help needed.  Our goal this year is to build a dormitory for orphans in Mukumu who are in heartbreaking circumstances.  Famine is a national emergency in Kenya this year, with 10,000 facing starvation so we will focus on farming more land and increasing funds to our feeding programs.  To see photos and updates on the trip please go to our website at www.suitcasesforafrica.com

We are currently developing our new gift cards with photos supporting our new projects.  They will be ready by November 1st.

Thank you and best wishes from,

The whole team at Suitcases from Africa

DEVELOPMENT & PEACE
Life Before Profit

In the Philippines some Canadian mining companies have been implicated in cases of human rights and environmental violations such as jeopardizing the quality and quantity of the water of the community, ruining livelihoods and displacing communities.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo the explosions from the mines, and large trucks passing through the communities have damaged the local environment, - a constant layer of mining dust covers plants and trees, which makes farming very difficult.

In Guatemala open pit gold mining releases large amounts of cyanide, arsenic and other chemicals into the water.

Many Canadian Companies behave in a responsible manner, but others care little for human rights and the environment.  Beyond the agreement signed by corporations to adhere to certain standards, there is no efficient mechanism to control, to sanction or to bring grievances.  The good will of company directors and friendly agreements do not suffice.  We need more than incentives for companies to behave responsibly and be accountable for their decisions.

The Catholic bishops of Quebec work to promote and support the annual Fall Campaign of the Catholic organization of Development & Peace.

This year D&P is embarking on a five year plan focusing on the respect of human rights and protection of the environment.  This present campaign urges us to work together to encourage our businesses to take on a greater social responsibility.

Please pick up more information at the entrance to the church, or see the bulletin board for further details.

D&P - 40 Years of Activism

In 1973 D&P and Australia Catholic Relief create the Asian Partnership for Human Development.  In 1978 D&P’s campaign is on the theme South Africa – A Time to Act; 60,000 cards are sent to political prisoners.  In 1979 D&P supports Argentina’s Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo. In 1983 D&P endorses the campaign Militarization an Obstacle to Development.  In 1999 D&P gathers 450,000 signatures supporting the cancellation of debt to the poorest countries.  In 2006 D&P delivers 236,000 Declarations to the Canadian Government calling for universal access to safe drinking water; also in 2006 D&P sends delegates to monitor elections in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Stamp Collection for D&P

The Social Justice Group is still collecting stamps to donate to Development & Peace.  There is a container at the back of the church in which to deposit them.

Please remember to leave a border of about 1/4”-1/2” around the stamps when detaching them from the envelopes.
