Upper Grades

                      SOCIAL STUDIES

Social Studies not only asks the student to understand and remember historical
facts, but expects the student to compare and contrast periods and peoples, or
                       analyze the period or era.

Grade Six completes the study of American History to the present day. Grade
Seven enters into the study of the Democratic System: Civics. World History and
Geography to 500 A.D. is the burden of the Eighth Grade curriculum.

                       MATHEMATICS

Basic Mathematics is completed by Grade Six. It is in this grade that students
                       master:

All the operations of common fractions and decimal fractions

Know how to convert into and out of percentages

                       Memorize commonly used fractional equivalents

Problem-solving provides the setting for the use of computation. Measurement in
both English and Metric are used.

Grade Seven begins Pre-Algebra with a graphic hands-on approach and then
proceeds to move into the operations. The more able students move quickly with
this course and are then scheduled for Algebra I in Grade Eight. Students having
difficulty with Pre-Algebra continue a second year with this development. Either
course positions a student well for high school math.

                       ENGLISH

All facets of grammar are studied in Grades Six, Seven and Eight. Writing now
means a paper consisting of three to five paragraphs. Reach topics as well as
creative pieces are assigned to provide the student with experience of writing a
paper. Bibliographies are expected and all papers must be keyed in on the
computer to receive a final grade. Reading continues since the interpretation of
the written word is what poses the most problem for these adolescent students.
Literature in the form of poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and science-fiction are used.

                       SCIENCE

Science touches on a variety of topics developed in themes over a wide range
from biology to electricity. In the course of three years, students are exposed to
physical, earth and biological worlds of science. Field trips, projects, lab
experiments and classroom lectures provide a rich learning environment.
