Intermediate Grades
The Departmental System begins with Grade 3. Students change classes.
Reading is continued as a subject with emphasis on interpretation and
application of reading.
VOCABULARY
Vocabulary and Spelling are tested weekly. Penmanship is taught to maintain
accuracy with cursive writing and neatness in presentation of work.
LANGUAGE ARTS
Language Arts develops grammar and creative writing. Students are expected
to
master the form and content of letter writing. Papers of two or three paragraphs
are expected by the end of Grade 5 as Explanatory and Descriptive Writing
is
developed.
MATHEMATICS
Mathematics is a structured, cyclic course which focuses on problem-solving.
Daily math drills in computation take place. Students are expected
to memorize
addition and subtraction math facts and multiplication facts. Long division
and
the beginning of fraction addition and subtraction dominate this grade
level.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Social Studies becomes much more important in this division. Third Grade
generalizes by studying the U.S. and its people. Alabama History and Geography
become the focus of Grade Four. Grade Five studies early United States
History
and Geography.
SCIENCE
Science is developed in themes. Students are introduced to the physical,
biological, and astronomical sciences.
