PARISH HISTORY

As the city of Keene grew in population, especially in the western part, and to meet the needs of the Catholics, a new parish was established in 1956 with Father Francis L. Curran as its first pastor. While awaiting the building of a new church, Mass was being celebrated for its four hundred eighty-two members at the Keene Junior High School (now the Keene High School).

Through the strong dedication and tireless efforts of many parishioners to help raise money for the construction, the present church opened its doors on Ash Wednesday, in 1957. The new parish, in addition to Keene, also served the towns of Chesterfield, Spofford, Westmoreland and Surry.

With the arrival of the second pastor, Father Samuel Hewitt, plans were made for the construction of a rectory near the church. This was completed by early Spring of 1965. After a succession of auctions, lawn parties, bake sales and suppers, the parish found itself debt free by the fall of 1970.

Over the course of the last twenty years, the parish has sought to implement the various changes in Liturgy and ministry in response to the needs and changes occurring in society and the Church.
