Msgr. Ian Edward Holland

Monsignor Ian Edward Holland, long-time Pastor of St. Augustine Church in Culver City, CA, died peacefully on Tuesday, November 26, in Los Angeles. Msgr. Holland had a great love for sailing, playing the church organ, and listening to the church choir. Msgr. was an accomplished organist and sailor.
Holland graduated Loyola High School in Los Angeles in 1942 and the Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT in 1946. He entered the Trappist Monastery of Our Lady of Gethsemani in Trappist, KY in May of 1950. After a two year postulancy he was sent to The Abbey of Our Lady of Geneses in Piffard, NY. He was ordained as a Trappist priest in 1958.
Msgr. Holland left the Order in 1967 after 17 years of service and joined the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. He was assigned to Saint Luke the Evangelist Church in Temple City as Associate Pastor, where he joined a newly ordained priest, Father (now Bishop)
Stephen E. Blaire, forming a friendship that was to last for many years. His period of service at St. Luke's in the Camelia City lasted for 16 years.
In 1983, he left the San Gabriel Valley to accept an appointment in Culver City as Pastor at St. Augustine's Church. Reverend Holland was elevated to the rank of Monsignor in 1992, and continued in that capacity until his retirement in July of 1995, when he assumed the title of Pastor Emeritus.
Msgr. Holland was preceded in death by his parents Annette and Harry Lee Holland; sister, Joanne Holland Barton; niece Deirdre Sullivan Motley, nephew Hugh Barton, and cousin Johnny Macintosh and Danalda Macintosh.
He is survived by his sister, Marylee Holland Sullivan; 12 nieces and nephews; John J. Sullivan, Jr., Ann T. Sullivan Whitehurst, Eileen Sullivan McCallin, Jennifer Sullivan Rohrbaugh, Owen Sullivan, Margaret Sullivan Durando, Kathleen Sullivan Lynch, Lucy Sullivan, Brian Sullivan, Daniel Barton, Allison Barton MacLourie and Andrew Barton.
He is also survived by 35 grandnieces and grandnephews.
Remembrances may be made to St. Augustine Catholic Church and Loyola High School (L.A.) Rosary and Vigil were held on Monday, Dec. 2, 2002 at St. Augustine Church. A Funeral Mass was celebrated by His Eminence Cardinal Roger M. Mahoney and Most Reverend Bishop Stephen Blair the following morning at 11:00 AM. Interment followed the Mass at nearby Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City. |
