6th Annual Reunion Renewal Retreat

Grand Time Anticipated at the Grand Ultreya - Sunday July 27th

Don’t miss this extraordinary opportunity to reacquaint yourselves with old and new Cursillistas. This year St. Elizabeth Ann Seton is hosting the Grand Ultreya on its grounds in Lexington (Click here for directions) and it's almost here.  We pray for good weather and especially for good fellowship and a renewal of friendships.

Our witness this year will be ... well, in keeping with tradition, you'll have to be there to find out who will witness.  Due to inspiration from Fr. Ray, the St. Peter Claver choir will join us and lead our music during Mass.  If you've never heard them sing before, you're in for a real treat.

As always, families and close friends are invited to attend.  This year we will give a beautiful statue of "Joy of the Family" to the person(s) who bring the most prospective Cursillistas. What a wonderful opportunity to "make a friend, be a friend, and bring a friend to Christ" by sharing this special afternoon with someone you are considering inviting to join us in the Cursillo movement.

My small group, consisting of myself, Claudia Johnson, Cindy Olson, Kathy Paris, and Susan Whalen are coordinating this year's event but we need your support to make it a success.  Small groups, please bring a friend and let him/her know what a wonderful experience Cursillo is by introducing them to our 4th Day community.  Hope to see you at Grand Ultreya!

De Colores, Ellie Durbin

Reunion Retreat Weekend was " ... like a refreshing drink of sweet water ..."

The 6th Annual Reunion Renewal Retreat weekend is now in the history books and by all accounts, those gathered truly experienced and learned all about the Fruits of the Spirit in their lives.  In addition to several wonderful talks, the community enjoyed two days of spectacularly beautiful weather and each other's company.  Below you will find two articles from participants in the Reunion and you can read for yourself their thoughts and reflections on this special weekend.

After you read these reflections, I hope you'll mark your calendar for next year's Reunion Renewal which has been set for June 25th-27th and will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the start of regular Cursillo weekends in the Lexington diocese (before we became a diocese).

"Truly Renewing" (Harold & Bobbie Bayes)

The Sixth Annual Cursillo Reunion Retreat was like a refreshing drink of sweet water from an old, familiar well.  The weekend began Friday evening with a dynamic presentation from Father John Judie, who is a pastor in the Louisville diocese.  Father Judie led the group through a "prayer y imagination" session that was powerful and calming at the same time.

Each speaker Saturday and Sunday gave insightful talks on the fruits of the Spirit.  We will never forget the symbolism of the literal fruits and the spiritual fruits.  We were reminded that as Christians we are called to love unconditionally, just as God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit love us.

Like Cursillo, the impact of this experience is difficult to explain.  The weekend was powerful in a way that defies description.

Make a Friend, Be a Friend, and Bring a Friend to Ultreya (Joe Lerza)

In April I was blessed to be on Chris Weigel’s team.  He asked me to give the Evangelization talk.  As you are all aware, the final segment of this talk is Make a Friend, Be a Friend, and Bring a Friend to Christ.  This section of the talk is derived from Jesus’ charge to his Apostles to go out and preach the Good News.  On our 3-day weekends we were also given the charge by Christ to go out and preach the Gospel, and to use words if necessary.  On our 4th Day journey we are living examples of Christ to others in our families, at our workplace, in our communities; wherever we are.

In February I attended a Cursillo workshop in Richmond, put on by the regional service team.  The theme was the Ultreya.  I learned that in many Dioceses in the U. S., the Cursillo Community uses the Ultreya as a recruitment tool to evangelize potential candidates to weekends.  So I got to thinking . . . how much easier is it to invite a potential candidate to a one hour “prayer meeting”, than to a full-blown 3+ day weekend?  Much easier!

"... breath of fresh spiritual air"

(Mary & Phil Jackson)

Phil and I have recently returned from our fifth (of six) Reunion Renewal Retreats.  We have found them to be a “summertime breath of fresh spiritual air” for us in the midst of our active retirement years.  From 7:00 p.m. Friday evening until Noon Sunday, we were surrounded by fellow Cursillistas renewing ourselves in the Holy Spirit by the grace-filled speakers who shared their wisdom and gifts with those in attendance.

The Friday evening speaker was Father John Judie who spoke of how “All Prayer Leads To God”, but first we must clear our minds of all “clutter” – let it go – so that in our prayer time we can return to God the results of the gifts He has given us.  Loving God in return for His love for us, and in so doing we will receive His “inner peace” which is His Love for us.

Lexington Ultreya Team Update (Tim Weinmann)

I wanted to give everybody a quick update on what the Lexington Ultreya team is up to this summer.  As most of us do during the summer,  we've slowed down a bit as members of the team take some vacation and enjoy a little R&R time.  But we aren't sitting still either.

We are continuing to form ourselves as a team and at this point in time, we have completed the writing of our mission statement and supporting objectives which will guide us as we discern the many ways we hope to support our Lexington Ultreya community.  Click here to see that mission statement along with other team information at the Lexington Ultreya Team website.

The sole reason for the team's existence is to support the Lexington Cursillo Ultreya community in whatever way we can as we continue our 4th Day journey.  In the same way that a 3-day weekend team begins the journey with the candidates that attend a weekend, this team is in place to support ALL the cursillistas after the weekend has concluded.

Fall 2003 Weekend Information

(Tim Weinmann)

The fall weekends will be upon us before you know it.  Are you working on bringing any friends to Christ through these weekends?  The teams are well into their formation and need your support by sharing your 4th Day with those around you in such a way that they see Christ living in and through you.  Are you "praying to God about your friends before speaking to your friends about God?"  Before you can invite someone to Christ by inviting them to make the weekend, you first have to "make a friend and then be a friend" so you can be in that exciting position of asking that friend to come closer to Christ through the Cursillo weekend experience.

Invite a friend to come to Grand Ultreya.  Invite a friend to come to your local Ultreya.  Invite a friend to join you for one of your small group sessions.  These are just a few suggestions you can use to give someone a taste of Cursillo as you witness to them about the impacts this movement has made in your life and how God is working in and through you.  Pray and do palanca for your friend that God would move them to be open to that special invitation when you present it to them.  And then act with confidence and be at peace as you work to bring your friend closer to Christ.  Below you can find out all the details about the fall weekends including who is on each team and who is doing what talks, etc.  Note that the section for candidates is blank.  Let us all be praying and working to be sure we can fill in names for those slots this fall!
