Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church
Our History
Welcome! It is a blessing and a pleasure to have you
with us. Whether you have been a member
for many years or just joining us, you are part of a remarkable and truly
blessed chapter of Southeast
Michigan’s Catholic History.
It
all began on June 29, 1979. Bishop Kenneth J. Povish of the Catholic
Diocese of Lansing appointed Fr. Charles Irvin as founder and pastor of our as
yet unnamed parish. On September 16, 1979, the first Mass of the Parish Community was celebrated at
the Hamburg VFW. On that day, 161
families were signed up in the First Families Registry. Shortly afterward, the parish was given the
name Church of the Holy Spirit by a consensus of the families.
A trailer home was placed on the Fitzgerald
farm on Spicer Road in
October. The trailer served as our
parish office and a facility for daily Mass.
Later that month, Fr. Irvin signed an option to purchase our current
37-acre site. This purchase included a
badly fire-damaged house that, thanks to the generosity and hard work of many
parish families, now serves as Fr. Bill’s Rectory and provides much needed
meeting space.
November
14, 1979 saw the establishment of our Parish Council. At the time our Saturday Masses were held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on M-36. Our Teen Club was organized in January of
1980. February 3, 1980 was the birthday of the Women’s
Guild.
Ground was broken for our Parish Center on April 11, 1981.
All Saint’s Day of that year was the day of establishment of the Knights
of Columbus Spirit of Mary Council #7891.
The first Mass in the new Parish Center (now the Activity Center) was celebrated
on Thanksgiving Day of 1981. On December
5, Bishop Povish officially dedicated our new facility.
By September of 1984, there were 466
registered families in the parish. On June 22, 1987, Fr. Paul Cummings was appointed
Pastor. Holy Spirit Catholic Church
became the official name of our parish..
Dedication of our new church building and the establishment of the Book
and Gift Shop took place on September 13,
1992.
Fr. Tim Krzyzaniak became our new Pastor
in July of 1996. Under the direction of
Fr. Tim, the statues of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Sacred Heart were added
to the Altar area. The Crucifix was
added as well as St. Joseph and the Holy
Spirit Icon. Altar Bells soon could be
heard and the outdoor shrines and Stations of the Cross were added. Our parish saw the fulfillment of its name
“Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church.”
Fr. William Thomas was appointed Pastor
in August of 1999. Father placed the
Tabernacle, the place where our Sacred Redeemer dwells day and night, in the
center of the Altar area.
