The race was held at the beautiful
Hudson Mills Metropark. The park is located along the Huron River
and features ample parking and easy access from US-23 and North
Territorial.
Saturday's weather was absolutely spectacular for the spectators but a bit on the warm side for the runners. Conditions were ideal for the Division II races with early morning temperatures near 60 degrees. As the day progressed, temperatures rose quickly to the mid 70's under bright sunny skies and only a light-cooling breeze. The premier race of the day was the Division III women featuring the top 3 ranked schools in the state. Defending champion Hillsdale, placing 6 runners in the top 20, edged Goodrich 40-41 with Grand Rapids West Catholic taking 3rd place. Goodrich's Kayla O'Mara claimed first in 19:06. Defending D4 state champion Greenhills, minus 2 top runners, stepped up a division and placed a strong 4th with Katie Olson having a breakthrough race finishing 3rd in 19:24. In the men's race first time participant, Grand Rapids West Catholic placed all 7 runners in the top 16 to win the division. Hillsdale used a 1-2 finish to take 2nd with Josh Perrin smoking the course in 15:47, nearly 1 minute ahead of teammate R.P. White. |

For the second straight year, D2 Dexter stepped up a division to compete
against the 'big boys' in Division I and claimed the championship. Saline
and Milford, resting some of their 'big guns', placed 2nd and
3rd. Dexter looks poised to win a 2nd state
championship. Saline's Dustin Voss used a 2nd half surge to
pull away from Milford's Dan Derusha to win with the day's fastest time
of 15:31. His strong performance bodes well for Dustin as the winner of
this race each of the past two years has gone on to win the state
championship. In the women's race Davison's Lisa Senakiewich repeated
as champion. Lisa charged out to an early lead and never looked back.
Saline won handily over Churchill, Milford and Clarkston with all resting
many of their top athletes.
In D4 look out for Southfield Christian who captured both races. Megan Carter of Southfield Christian won the women's race and her team showed great depth by placing 4 in the Top 10. Vandercook Lake's Adam Sprangel repeated as men's champion. The Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard women took second place without one of their top runners who was out with an injury. Kelsey Devereaux of Jackson Northwest posted the fastest women's time of the day in winning the Division II race in 19:00. The Milan program has made great improvement under Coach Steve Porter and nosed out Dexter and Chelsea to win the women's team title. In a very tight men's team race, Chelsea edged first time participant Crestwood, Marshall, Orchard Lake St. Mary's and Lincoln to win. Crestwood's Jon Hans was the individual champion. |
